章節(jié)摘錄
插圖:Usually it takes millions of years for a sea to turninto land, but this could be realized in a fewmonths at the Yellow River Delta. Only here canthe rapid transformation of land and sea be witnessed. The Yellow River Delta is located at the river's estuaryin north Shandong Province. Like a huge yellow dragon, the Yellow River carries a large quantity of sand and siltand roars through until it gushes into Bohai Bay, dyeinga large area yellow. Each year the river carries more thanone billion tons of sand and silt from the inland to itsestuary, which gathers sediment to form the "newestland" on the earth and constantly pushes the coastlineforward, at an annual average speed of 2 to 3 km. As aresult, China sees an increase of its land by scores of sq.km every year. The Yellow River Delta is a huge sector of landcentered at the course of the Yellow River, with thoseareas farthest from the sea in existence from the earliesttimes. Therefore, walking from the inland to the seasidealong the river can yield answers to the mystery of thetransformation of land and sea.
