前言

　　《新課標(biāo)培優(yōu)專項通·英語隨身讀》是面向中學(xué)生的一套閱讀輔助教材。初中每年級一冊，共三冊；高中每學(xué)期一冊，共六冊。入選的文章體裁多樣，有對話、記敘、論說、說明、書信、廣告等；題材廣泛，涵蓋文化、教育、歷史、地理、科技、經(jīng)濟(jì)、友情、親情、校園生活等。具有趣味性、時代性、可思性，與學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)、生活密切相關(guān)。每篇閱讀配有少量形式多樣的練習(xí)，以增進(jìn)英語的習(xí)得。既可提高學(xué)生英語素養(yǎng)，又能增強(qiáng)學(xué)生的應(yīng)試能力。　　本冊是《新課標(biāo)培優(yōu)專項通·英語隨身讀》的第五冊，主要面向高中一年級第二學(xué)期的學(xué)生。全書有十個單元，每一個單元由同一主題的四篇短文組成。短文后配備了是非題、填空題、連線題、選擇題等形式多樣的自測題，可以幫助學(xué)生檢測自己對短文的閱讀理解程度，同時也有助于學(xué)生在具體的語言環(huán)境中更好地掌握詞匯和語法要點(diǎn)?！缎抡n標(biāo)培優(yōu)專項通：英語隨身讀（高一下）》所選材料短小精悍，引人入勝，是高一學(xué)生提高詞匯量、擴(kuò)展知識面、培養(yǎng)英語學(xué)習(xí)興趣的好幫手?！　】傮w而言，閱讀理解能力包含以下幾個方面：（1）理解文章的主旨和要義；（2）理解文章的具體信息；（3）根據(jù)上下文推斷生詞的詞義；（4）依據(jù)文章做出簡單的判斷和推理；（5）理解文章的基本結(jié)構(gòu)；（6）理解作者的意圖、觀點(diǎn)和態(tài)度。在做多項選擇題時，要注意以上能力的運(yùn)用。另外，必須注意的是：答題總是以文章為依據(jù)，這就是說，答案要在文章里找到根據(jù)?！　　缎抡n標(biāo)培優(yōu)專項通·英語隨身讀》的編委有（以姓氏筆畫為序）：杜興馨、陳國清、陳黎峰、張靜燕、余霞、周建林、姜發(fā)兵、倪耀輝、曹雅娟。

內(nèi)容概要

在中學(xué)的各級考試乃至中考與高考中，占試卷最大分值的部分是閱讀，答對所有試題的前提是能夠快速有效地閱讀。因此，掌握閱讀技巧、熟讀各種體裁與題材的文章，是提高學(xué)生語言素質(zhì)和應(yīng)試能力的根本途徑。為了幫助大家實(shí)現(xiàn)這一目標(biāo)，我們組織著名大學(xué)英語教授和中學(xué)英語特級教師以及骨干教師，依托多年中、高考命題研究成果和全國重點(diǎn)大學(xué)與全省重點(diǎn)中學(xué)教學(xué)實(shí)踐經(jīng)驗(yàn)，精心編寫本套圖書，具有很強(qiáng)的針對性和實(shí)用性。本叢書環(huán)繞中學(xué)教材所講授的主題展開。初中每年級一冊，共三冊：高中每學(xué)期一冊，共六冊，其中高三下為高考前的測試應(yīng)考內(nèi)容。本套書選材分為容易、中籌、較難三級，分別以☆、☆☆、☆☆☆標(biāo)注，適合于各層次學(xué)生選用。

　　The Story of an Hour（Ⅰ）樂極生悲（一）　　They knew that Louise Mallard had a weak heart. So they broke the bad news softly. Her husband, Brently, was dead.　　"There was a train accident, Louise," said her sister, Josephine, quietly.　　Her husbands friend, Richards, stood with Josephine. Richards brought the news, but Josephine told the story. She spoke in broken sentences.　　"Richards...was at the newspaper office. News of the accident came. Louise... Louise, Brentlys name was on the list. Brently...was killed, Louise."　　Louise did not hear the story eoldly, like some other women would. She could not close her mind or her heart to the news. Like a sudden storm, her tears broke out. She cried loudly in her sisters arms. Then, just as suddenly, the tears stopped. She went to her room alone. She wanted no one to be with her.　　In front of the window stood an empty chair. She sat down and looked out the window. She was very tired after her tears. Her body felt cold, her mind and heart were empty.　　Outside her window she could see the trees. The air smelled like spring rain. She could hear someone singing far away. Birds sang near the house. Blue sky showed between the clouds. She rested.　　She sat quietly, but a few weak tears still fell. She had a young, strong face. But now her eyes showed nothing. She looked out the window at the blue sky. She was not thinking, or seeing. She was waiting.　　There was something coming to her. She was waiting for it with fear. What was it？ She did not know; she could not give it a name. But she felt it coming out from the sky. It reached her through the sound, the smell, the color of the air.　　Slowly she became excited. Her breath came fast, her heart beat faster. She began to see this thing. It wanted to find her and take her. She tried to fight against it. But she could not. Her mind was as weak as her two small white hands. Then she stopped fighting against it. A little word broke from her lips.
