本書(shū)通過(guò)所選文章，勾勒出國(guó)際組織理論的發(fā)展軌跡：第一階段在對(duì)歐洲區(qū)域一體化的研究中形成了功能主義和新功能主義理論，表明國(guó)際組織具有削弱國(guó)際體系無(wú)政府性的功能；第二階段在新現(xiàn)實(shí)主義和新自由制度主義的辯論中形成了現(xiàn)實(shí)主義和自由主義國(guó)際組織理論，突出了國(guó)際制度的獨(dú)立意義和在促成合作方面的重大作用，研究重點(diǎn)已經(jīng)從國(guó)際組織結(jié)構(gòu)和功能等淺層事實(shí)描述轉(zhuǎn)向國(guó)際機(jī)制、國(guó)際規(guī)范等深層理論探討，并從推理層面證明了無(wú)政府性的可弱化性；第三階段在理性主義和建構(gòu)主義的論戰(zhàn)中產(chǎn)生了建構(gòu)主義國(guó)際組織理論。建構(gòu)主義國(guó)際組織理論關(guān)注的是國(guó)際制度對(duì)國(guó)家身份的轉(zhuǎn)化作用，強(qiáng)調(diào)的是主體間互動(dòng)，導(dǎo)向的是無(wú)政府性的多元意義，強(qiáng)調(diào)以合作友善為核心的無(wú)政府性是可以被建構(gòu)起來(lái)的。從新現(xiàn)實(shí)主義到新自由主義再到建構(gòu)主義形成了國(guó)際組織理論的發(fā)展脈絡(luò)，國(guó)際制度的服務(wù)功能和建構(gòu)功能構(gòu)成了國(guó)際組織理論建設(shè)的核心思想。這一縱一橫兩條主線是研究國(guó)際組織的一個(gè)基本圖譜。正因?yàn)槿绱?，這部文選是國(guó)際組織研究領(lǐng)域里一本很有用處的教科書(shū)。
