《紅字》圍繞四個人物講述了一個情感的悲劇。身體畸形的英國老學(xué)究齊靈窩斯送年輕的妻子海斯特定居于波士頓,兩年后回到此地,卻發(fā)現(xiàn)妻子正立在該鎮(zhèn)的刑臺上,懷里抱著一個私生子。海斯特因拒絕說出通奸同犯,被判胸前帶紅色“A”字終生受辱…… 七年后,年輕的牧師齊姆斯太爾終于坦白了自己的罪惡,隨之猝然而死。一直暗中偵查妻子的情夫的齊靈窩斯也因心力交瘁,一年后死去。女主人海斯特因其勤勞、善良,最終獲得了人們的諒解,但她美好的年華也在痛苦的等待中耗盡了。只有活潑可愛的珍珠健康地成長起來,后來嫁給一位英國貴族,獲得美滿結(jié)局。
作者簡介
霍桑(1804-1864),美國文藝復(fù)興時期著名作家,超驗主義作家群中的主將之一?;羯5淖嫔嫌袃扇嗽鴧⑴c對異教徒的迫害,即所謂塞勒姆巫師案?;羯5耐昙丛诠沛?zhèn)林蔭遮蔽的“凄涼城堡”中度過的,大學(xué)畢業(yè)后又在老屋度過十二年的隱居生活,磨練文筆。但早年的創(chuàng)作并不成功,而且終生貧困。后來在民主黨朋友的幫助下到海關(guān)任職,又曾受做了總統(tǒng)的同學(xué)皮爾斯的提攜出任駐利物浦的領(lǐng)事。
《紅字》即是霍桑丟掉海關(guān)職務(wù),在貧困的逼迫中夜以繼日地工作,僅用五個月的時間寫成的,從此奠定了在文學(xué)中的地位。其后又完成《帶七個尖頂?shù)姆孔印贰ⅰ队袷裣瘛返取?br /> 霍桑注意探索美國本土題材,反映新英格蘭時期清教徒們復(fù)雜的情感及心理活動,具有神秘色彩,語言凝練,意象豐富,至今仍具有震撼人心的藝術(shù)力量。
