Friar Laurence, who was standing outside his own door, caught sight ofjuliet running down the woodland path, and he was very glad to see her, for he had just received the most disturbing news. Count Paris had visited him and told him of the proposed marriage between himself and Juliet, and had asked the old priest to marry them that very Thursday. Here was a problem indeed! Somehow this new wedding must be postponed until the Capulets' anger against Romeo had died down, until the Prince could be per-suaded to forgive the young man and permit him to return toVerona. Friar Laurence held out his arms to welcome Juliet, and his heart ached as he saw her pale, tear-stained face and the look of anxious misery in her eyes. This was no expression for a young bride to wear, and he longed to help her in any way he could. He led her silently into his hut, and Juliet cried distractedly: 'O! Shut the door! And when thou hast done so,Come weep with me; past hope, past cure, past help.' The old man said sadly:'Ah, Juliet, I already know thy grief. And I can spy a kind of hope, if thou art willing to risk death and take a desperate remedy rather than marry Count Paris.' 'O! bid me leap, rather than marry Paris, from off the battle-ments of yonder tower,' cried Juliet. 'Or bid me lurkl where ser-pents are. I will risk death a thousand times, and I will do it with-out fear or doubt, if by so doing I can remain the unstained2 wife ofRomeo.' Friar Laurence went to a cupboard and took out a small bottle filled with a colourless liquid. He stood in silence for a moment, staring at the bottle in his hand; then suddenly he seemed to make up his mind and turned again to Juliet. 'Go home, be merry, and give consent to marry Paris,' he said to her. 'But tomorrow night when you go to bed, drink this medicine. After a short time you will sink into a deep and death-like sleep. No warmth, no breath will rise from you; your lips and cheeks will turn deathly pale. You will lie for forty-two hours in this trance3, and then you will awake as from a pleasant sleep.' Juliet slowly took the bottle from him, but her eyes were still clouded with grief and doubt. 'How can that help me?' she asked the old priest, and he explained. 'Everyone will think that you are dead,' he said, 'and you will be placed in the family vault4. In the meantime, I will write to Romeo. His servant, Balthasar, can bear the letter to Mantua, and Romeo, on hearing my news, will come at once. 'And he andl Will watch thy waking, and that very night Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua.' ……
