本書同其他一些美國政治思想讀物的一個(gè)不同之處，是它不僅編選了主流思想家、政治家的名篇，還收進(jìn)了諸如馬爾科姆·X這類激進(jìn)思想家的言論。但正如艾薩克所指出的，即使處于異端的美國左翼思想家，也大都排斥社會主義和共產(chǎn)主義思想，而只是從左的方面去批評當(dāng)政者違背了美國賴以建國的自由主義傳統(tǒng)。
