《大學(xué)英語》是根據(jù)國家教育委員會審定批準(zhǔn)的《大學(xué)英語教學(xué)大綱(文理科本科用)》編寫的一套系列教材,分精讀、泛讀、聽力、快速閱讀、語法與練習(xí)五種教程,于1986年出版試用本,1992年出版正式本。本教材的精讀、泛讀、快速閱讀和聽力教程各按分級教學(xué)的要求編寫六冊,每級一冊。供1-6級使用;語法與練習(xí)編寫四冊供1-4級使用。精讀與聽力教程均配有教師用書和錄音磁帶。對低于大綱規(guī)定入學(xué)要求的學(xué)生,另編預(yù)備級精讀、泛讀教程各兩冊。全套教材由復(fù)旦大學(xué)、北京大學(xué)、華東師范大學(xué)、中國人民大學(xué)、武漢大學(xué)和南京大學(xué)分工編寫。復(fù)旦大學(xué)董亞芬擔(dān)任總主編。前大學(xué)外語教材編審委員會綜合大學(xué)英語編審組的全體成員對這套教材的設(shè)計與編寫自始至終給予關(guān)注。這次修訂是在廣泛聽取全國各地使用本系列教材的教師們的意見并通過問卷形式對數(shù)以萬計的師生征求意見的基礎(chǔ)上進(jìn)行的。大學(xué)外語教學(xué)指導(dǎo)委員會綜合大學(xué)英語組對本教材的修訂提供了多方面的指導(dǎo)與幫助。修訂的宗旨是“面向21世紀(jì),將大學(xué)英語教學(xué)推上一個新臺階”。修訂本根據(jù)各教程的具體情況,對課文作適當(dāng)調(diào)整,提高大綱詞匯的覆蓋率和常用詞匯的重現(xiàn)率,進(jìn)一步完善練習(xí),突出重點(diǎn)詞語的操練;同時加強(qiáng)各教程間的橫向聯(lián)系,做到既自成體系又相互補(bǔ)充,形成整體。修訂本更加注意文、理、工、農(nóng)、醫(yī)等各科的通用性,力求給學(xué)生打好“寬、厚、牢”的語言基礎(chǔ)?!洞髮W(xué)英語》預(yù)備級精讀教程在修訂的過程中,保留了原教材的布局和特色。并在此基礎(chǔ)上,增加了部分練習(xí)和閱讀材料,以保證學(xué)生在一個新的水平上復(fù)習(xí)、鞏固在中學(xué)階段學(xué)過的語音、語法、詞匯等主要內(nèi)容,為進(jìn)一步學(xué)好英語打下堅實的基礎(chǔ)。《大學(xué)英語》預(yù)備級精讀教程由武漢大學(xué)外語學(xué)院英文系負(fù)責(zé)編寫。陳祖芳教授擔(dān)任主編,袁錦翔教授擔(dān)任主審,大學(xué)外語教學(xué)指導(dǎo)委員會委員郭杰克教授審讀了全書。參加編寫的有劉寒冰、史寬。美籍專家Meek夫婦審讀了全書的英文部分。上海外語教育出版社的編輯同志在付梓前仔細(xì)編審,精心設(shè)計,謹(jǐn)此一并致謝。由于編者水平與經(jīng)驗有限,教材中難免還有不足之處,希望廣大讀者批評指正。編者1997年3月

This paragraph about Myra is an example of irony.Myra had got a medal for her work for the aged and her husband was made mayor.All this seems to tell US that she was a praiseworthy person committed to the good of the old and helpless.When we examine her actions,however,we will come to see the irony of the situation.Did she really care about old people?In no way.She was SO thoughtless that she did not come to see her own old mother on her birthday,nor did she call her on the phone.So the apparent meaning of this paragraph is just the opposite to the intended meaning.
