前言

　　《大學(xué)英語>是根據(jù)國家教育委員會審定批準(zhǔn)的《大學(xué)英語教學(xué)大綱（文理科本科用）》編寫的一套系列教材，分精讀、泛讀、聽力、快速閱讀、語法與練習(xí)五種教程，于1986年出版試用本，1992年出版正式本?！　”窘滩牡木x、泛讀、快速閱讀和聽力教程各按分級教學(xué)的要求編寫六冊，每級一冊，供1－6級使用；語法與練習(xí)編寫四冊，供1-4級使用。精讀與聽力教程均配有教師用書和錄音磁帶；泛讀教程也配有教師用書。請參見第一冊的修訂本前言。對低于大綱規(guī)定入學(xué)要求的學(xué)生，另編預(yù)備級精讀、泛讀教程各兩冊。全套教材由復(fù)旦大學(xué)、北京大學(xué)、華東師范大學(xué)、中國人民大學(xué)、武漢大學(xué)和南京大學(xué)分工編寫，復(fù)旦大學(xué)董亞芬擔(dān)任總主編。前大學(xué)外語教材編審委員會綜合大學(xué)英語編審組的全體成員對這套教材的設(shè)計與編寫自始至終給予關(guān)注。　　這次修訂是在廣泛聽取全國各地使用本系列教材的教師們的意見并通過問答卷形式對數(shù)以萬計的師生征求意見的基礎(chǔ)上進(jìn)行的。第一屆大學(xué)外語教學(xué)指導(dǎo)委員會綜合大學(xué)英語組對本教材的修訂提供了多方面的指導(dǎo)與幫助。修訂的宗旨是“面向21世紀(jì)，將大學(xué)英語教學(xué)推上一個新臺階”。修訂時根據(jù)各教程的具體情況，對課文作適當(dāng)調(diào)整，提高大綱詞匯的覆蓋率和常用詞匯的重現(xiàn)率，進(jìn)一步完善練習(xí)，突出重點詞語的操練；同時加強各教程間的橫向聯(lián)系，做到既自成體系又相互補充，形成整體。修訂本更加注意文、理、工、農(nóng)、醫(yī)等各科的通用性，力求給學(xué)生打好“寬、厚、牢”的語言基礎(chǔ)?！　　洞髮W(xué)英語》泛讀教程由北京大學(xué)英語系大學(xué)英語教研室負(fù)責(zé)編寫。張硯秋擔(dān)任主編，王岷源擔(dān)任主審。解又明、焦英、呂鈺凡、胡之璉、朱荔、周學(xué)藝等參加編寫。本教程承美國專家Howard Dewar和John Alton以及英國專家Anthony J.Ward協(xié)助審閱。1996年修訂時，澳大利亞專家Tonv Gallaghei也協(xié)助審閱?！　”緯鵀榉鹤x教程修訂本第二冊，供大學(xué)英語二級學(xué)生使用，由張硯秋、張梅修訂。上海外語教育出版社的編輯同志在付梓前仔細(xì)編審，精心設(shè)計，謹(jǐn)此一并致謝。　　由于編者水平與經(jīng)驗有限，教材中難免還有不足之處，希望廣大讀者批評指正。

內(nèi)容概要

本書為《大學(xué)英語》泛讀教程第二冊，供大學(xué)英語二年級學(xué)生使用。本冊共分三十課，分十個單元使用，每個單元備有三篇課文。課文全部選自原文材料，略有刪改。泛讀課文的選材原則為新穎、題材廣泛、體裁多樣、知識性與趣味性并重，適當(dāng)控制難度，以便同學(xué)順利閱讀。

　　According to Gertrude Stein she visited the painters studio eighty orninety times while he painted her picture. While Picasso painted they talkedabout everything in the world that interested them. Then one day Picassowiped out the painted head on which he had worked for so long. “When Ilook at you I cant see you any more！” he remarked.　　Picasso went away for the summer. When he returned he went at onceto the unfinished picture in the corner of his studio. Quickly he finished theface from memory. He could see the womans face more clearly in his mindthan he could see it when she sat in the studio in front of him.　　When people complained to him that the painting of Miss Stein didnt looklike her, Picasso would reply, “Too bad. Shell have to arrange to look like thepicture.” But thirty years later Gertrude Stein said that Picassos painting of herwas the only picture she knew that showed her as she really was.
