前言

在2009年7月霍克思去世之前的一年里，他曾與上海外語教育出版社磋商在中國出版十八世紀(jì)文學(xué)名著《紅樓夢》漢英對照版的事宜。(霍克思翻譯了前八十回，他邀請我翻譯了高鶚編輯的結(jié)尾部分的后四十回)。我們合譯的五卷英文本題名《石頭記》，于二十世紀(jì)七八十年代在倫敦由企鵝出版社出版，已經(jīng)多次重印。(美國印第安納大學(xué)出版社同時出版了印數(shù)不多的精裝本，現(xiàn)在早已無處尋覓。)霍克思的前八十回譯文經(jīng)常被看作翻譯藝術(shù)的典范而廣受研究，許多研究者(特別是中國的研究者)就此撰寫了博士論文。人們普遍認(rèn)為霍克思的譯文成功地完成了看似不可能的任務(wù)——第一次把中國成就最大、篇幅最長的文學(xué)杰作之一介紹給英語世界的讀者。為此，當(dāng)然還有其他原因，我們對出版雙語版很感興趣。(霍克思和我年輕的時候都學(xué)過拉丁語和希臘語經(jīng)典，我們是讀著著名的洛布古典叢書雙語對照本長大的。)霍克思讓我?guī)椭瓿蛇@項重要的任務(wù)，而在他去世之前，我們也已經(jīng)確定了大部分的細(xì)節(jié)問題。最重要的是，我們找到了一位版本校勘的理想人選，那就是范圣宇博士。當(dāng)時他在福建師范大學(xué)工作，現(xiàn)在在堪培拉的澳洲國立大學(xué)。范博士早先于北京師范大學(xué)完成的博士論文曾仔細(xì)地研究過這部小說的兩個英譯本。    出版雙語對照本有時可能很簡單，但本書卻并非如此，十分不容易，也相當(dāng)耗時間。這是因為霍克思從漫長的翻譯過程一開始就知道這部小說的版本歷史非常復(fù)雜。隨著翻譯的進(jìn)展，他懷著越來越大的興趣鉆研了許多影印的手抄本和早期印刷本。他對原文的破綻也越來越著迷，并盡力設(shè)法彌補(bǔ)。他這么做并非出于某種抽象的學(xué)術(shù)目的，而是因為他對這部小說抱有一種難以名狀的熱愛(他早在二十世紀(jì)四十年代末于北京大學(xué)求學(xué)的時候就已經(jīng)如此了)。他希望為自己的譯文創(chuàng)造出一個合宜的好版本，既有可讀性，也比較連貫。    眼前這個對照版的?？闭撸瑸榱私o讀者提供與英譯相對照的恰當(dāng)?shù)闹形摹霸摹?，必須追溯譯者的考據(jù)工作，而譯者往往并未對此作任何記錄。霍克思本人(在十年左右的時間內(nèi))仔細(xì)梳理了他能找到的眾多版本，目的是為了組成他認(rèn)為最好的中文本子。范博士也必須這么做。過去的幾年中，我和他一起度過了許多愉快的時光，他耐心地校讀每一回，并特別注意其中的細(xì)節(jié)。我們合作得很愉快，因為我們都愿意為這部小說出力，也都愿意為一位翻譯大師效勞。    在完成這項任務(wù)的過程中，已出版的《紅樓夢英譯筆記》(香港嶺南大學(xué)影印出版的霍克思的四本筆記)提供了寶貴的線索。有時候霍克思仔細(xì)地記錄了他對各種版本的考據(jù)。但霍克思所據(jù)版本經(jīng)常也沒有確證，而我在與霍克思討論其中一些版本差異的時候，他自己也記不清三十多年前自己究竟做了些什么。范博士與我有時感覺像是福爾摩斯與華生醫(yī)生，盡量揣摩譯者的心思，復(fù)原“犯罪現(xiàn)場”?！八麨槭裁匆菢幼g?一定有某種原因；一定是照某個本子譯的……”很多時候也確實有這么一個本子。眼前這個新版本所盡力呈現(xiàn)的，就是霍克思自己重組的本子。    在文學(xué)翻譯史上，霍克思既是一位有創(chuàng)造性的翻譯家，也是一位嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)陌姹緦W(xué)家，這相當(dāng)罕見。他的版本研究完全是為翻譯服務(wù)的。他的翻譯基本沒什么注釋。他最希望的是，他的讀者(曹雪芹在全球范圍內(nèi)的新讀者)被作品本身的精彩所吸引，進(jìn)入它的想象世界。為了達(dá)到這個目標(biāo)，他仔細(xì)研究了文本中的每一處細(xì)節(jié)。學(xué)術(shù)研究成了一種游戲。范博士和我被卷入了這個游戲的另一階段，去解開這部極具魅力的小說的文本之謎，這多少有些神奇。原版中文小說的第一回就半真半假、意味深長地告訴讀者這部作品起源于神話，一方面似乎是開玩笑，另一方面叉在傳遞作者的“本旨”——也就是作品的“緣起”(第一卷，第6頁)，這同時又是一個出色的謎語，或是一種聲東擊西。還有比《紅樓夢》更讓讀者困惑與著迷的作品嗎?《紅樓夢》中的女媧補(bǔ)天石產(chǎn)生于神話中迷霧般的遠(yuǎn)古時代，出自大荒山無稽崖的青埂峰下(第一卷，第4頁)。云游的空空道人被石頭上刻的字吸引住了，聽了石頭的一番話，多少明白了這些文字的價值(其主題當(dāng)然是“大旨不過談情”)，于是從頭至尾抄錄回來，意欲“聞世傳奇”。在最后一回，即幾千頁之后的第一百二十回，瘋瘋癲癲的空空道人又從青埂峰前經(jīng)過。他注意到了石頭上“又歷敘了多少收緣結(jié)果的話頭”，于是把這個“完本”再抄錄了一遍?？湛盏廊苏f他曾經(jīng)抄錄的本子“未見返本還原”——暗指抄本只止于八十回，而高鶚編輯了后四十回(第五卷，第518頁)?？湛盏廊擞谑侵匦鲁浵聛?，希望“尋個世上清閑無事的人，托他傳遍”。但世上“不是建功立業(yè)之人，即系糊口謀衣之輩，那有閑情去和石頭饒舌?”可空空道人最終還是找到了一位在草庵中睡覺的隱士(“因想他必是閑人”)，幫助他“歸結(jié)這段新鮮公案”。這個人就是賈雨村——另一位《紅樓夢》的“助產(chǎn)士”，他的故事也被穿插在整部小說的情節(jié)之中。他的名字其實是“假語村言”的意思。令人欣喜的是，空空道人作為抄錄者和出版者的事業(yè)薪火相傳，延續(xù)至今。他先是遇到了一位愿意放下俗務(wù)來傳遞曹雪芹的“其中味”的翻譯家——霍克思為了翻譯《紅樓夢》辭去了牛津大學(xué)的教職?，F(xiàn)在，范圣宇又被這部小說迷住了。大約十年前我們在杭州西湖邊第一次相遇，從那以后他就全心投入來完成這項命中注定的任務(wù)了。他愿長年累月與這塊石頭“饒舌”。    希望這個新版本能給全世界新一代的讀者帶來快樂。也希望這套書能讓他們(用曹雪芹自己的話說)“當(dāng)那醉余睡醒之時，或避事消愁之際，把此一玩，不但是洗舊翻新，卻也省了些壽命筋力，不更去謀虛逐妄了?！?第一卷．第6頁)但最重要的是，希望他們在閱讀時也不要太當(dāng)真了——小說結(jié)尾處就提醒：希望他們不要忘記“原來是敷衍荒唐!不但作者不知．抄者不知，并閱者也不知，不過游戲筆墨，陶情適性而已!”(第五卷，第520頁)    閔福德    (范圣宇譯)

內(nèi)容概要

本次漢英對照版《紅樓夢》，前八十回的英文部分以霍克思先生翻譯的企鵝出版社《石頭記》(The Story Of the
Stone，Penguin Books)1973
年版第一卷、1977年版第二卷、1980年版第三卷為底本，參照霍克思先生《紅樓夢英譯筆記》(香港嶺南大學(xué)文學(xué)與翻譯研究中心，2000年)及相關(guān)日記、書信，對現(xiàn)有譯文作了全面系統(tǒng)的校訂。
中文部分則以人民文學(xué)出版社1964年豎排版(啟功校注)為底本，主要參?！都t樓夢八十回校本》(俞平伯校本)、《脂硯齋重評石頭記》(庚辰本
)、《脂硯齋甲戌抄閱再評石頭記》(甲戌本)、《戚蓼生序本石頭記》(有正本)、《乾隆抄本百廿回紅樓夢稿》(夢稿本)，這些都是霍克思先生在翻譯過程中主要參考過的本子。我們的目的是為讀者提供一個可靠的漢英對照本，同時如實地反映出霍克思先生在翻譯過程中到底做了哪些增刪改動，為翻譯研究者和愛好者提供參考。因為，讀者可以清楚地看到，霍克思的八十回英譯本，是與現(xiàn)存各種脂本程本都不一樣的本子，我們不妨稱之為“霍本”。這個奇特英譯《紅樓夢》，真實地反映了霍克思先生在翻譯過程中的諸多努力?；艨怂枷壬延?009年7月仙逝。在生前最后幾個月內(nèi)，他還在不斷地修改自己的譯文。本書也落實了這些修改意見。

Jia Zheng smiled    Not really．It turns out that the Commandant of the Haimen region，who has offered his SOn'S hand in marriage to my daughter，is himselfrelated to tile Viceroy，and has written asking him t0 take a special interest in my well—being The Viceroy was most affable，and even went so far as to say to me：“Now we are related too!…    Li reioiced inwardly,seeing in this new turn of"events cause to be bolder still in his own schemes．He encouraged Jia Zheng enthusiastically to proceed with the marriage    Communications between Kiangsi and the capital were slow，and it was hard for Jia Zheng to know whether 0r not he was personally implicated in Xue Pan’s troubles At such a great distance it would be difficult for him to influence the course ofevents in Xue Pan’sfavour When he returned to his own yamen，he despatched a family servant to the capital to ascertain exactly what had happened and at the same time to carry a message to GrandmotherJia，informing her of the marriage proposal If she agreed，he suggested that Tan—chun should be sent straight away tojoin him，in preparation for the wedding The servant set off witll a11 speed for the capital He reported first to Lady Wang，and then went to the Board of Civil Office．where his enquiries revealed that the only person to have suffered in the Xue Pan affair was the acting magistrate ofTai—ping，who had lost his job，and that Jia Zheng was not in any way implicated．The servant sent back a reassuring report to Jia Zheng，himself remaining behind to await further developments。        It will be remenabered to what lengths Aunt Xue had gone，and with what large sunls of monev stle had bribed the various courts involved，to bring in a verdict of‘a(chǎn)ccidental homicide’in the earlier stages ofXue Pan。s case She had been proposing to raise the money for his fine by selling the family pawnshop business Now when she heard of the new verdict brought bv the Board ofPunishments，she sent still more bribes，but to no avail The sentence was confirmed—death by strangulation after the Autumn Assizes Day and night sbe wept tears of grief and rage……
