本書是一部個(gè)人的、懷舊的故事集,描述了從1919年到1924年的那些特殊歲月里,莊士敦在其人生頂峰時(shí)期與中國(guó)結(jié)下的不解之緣。其時(shí),中國(guó)媒體針對(duì)莊士敦本人和溥儀有諸多的責(zé)難,而莊士敦所關(guān)心的,顯然只是他對(duì)那些年里所發(fā)生事件的記述,可以對(duì)那些責(zé)難作出一勞永逸的反駁。為了回應(yīng)對(duì)他和皇上的批評(píng),莊士敦描繪了在紫禁城那個(gè)奇異、封閉的世界里獨(dú)特而令人憧憬的生活圖景。莊士敦諳熟中國(guó)歷史與文化,于是,那個(gè)幾近為人遺忘時(shí)代的豐富的歷史細(xì)節(jié),雪泥鴻爪般躍然于莊氏之筆端。加之,他與溥儀的密切關(guān)系,以及與那個(gè)時(shí)代許多大人物私人關(guān)系之熟稔,使得莊士敦得以對(duì)他們盡情褒貶點(diǎn)評(píng)。
