  •     Of all Chuck's books, Lullaby is probably the easiest read, with its relatively 'conventional' plots and way of story-telling, not like Rant which you won't get it untill well past 1/3 of the book.

This is the 8th book of Chuck's I read, and perhaps i finally have had enough of his transgression, nihilism, anarchism, anti-consumerism and all his eloquence, his incredible collection of 'small' and trivial knowledge of every day life and crafts and tricks...

      when you read:
"the way you can go to Paris or Beijing...and everywhere there's a MacDonlad hamburger, this is the ecological equivalent of franchised life-forms. Every place is the same place...the only biodiversity we are going to have left, is Coke versus Pepsi."

when you read this, aren't you also reading Fight club, Survivor, Rant, Diary...? indeed, all of his stories...doesn't it sound familiar? This bitching about how the world is dominated by commercial products, how people are brainwashed by whatever's on tv or any mass media...then the chain of events snowballed into a plague, an epidemic, a 'project mayhem' or any shockingly big-scale social frenzy...

I'm not saying I hate it, the transgressional anti-consumerism theme still clicks with me and I believe with most people who actually care to read and think (instead of, well, being brain-washed by whatever's on mass media); and the writing is catchy, the plots clever...it's just that after 8 books of the same bitching, i'm perhaps getting little tired (alas, such is human, greedy, insatiate). I even start to think that besides being a writing genius, Chuck is perhaps also commercially very deft...the way he successfully 'franchised' his first hit Fight Club (every book is a copy of copy of copy of Fight Club?)...the way Stephen King and Dan Brown are successful...

that said, I still think Chuck is great, I still love him, I'm still so going to Portland one day to perhaps meet up with him!

  •   all the moaning and whining.. sigh.
