Entering the 1870s Shanghai became more of an international city. New periodicals were constantly emerging in different languages.ShanghaiCourier(1868),ShanghaiNewsletter (1871),Celestial Empire(1874),Nouvelliste de Changhai (1870),Echo de Changhai (1886), Der Ostasiatische Lloyd (1886), as well as the Japanese paper Shanhai shinpo (1890). The influx of Western learning began with the translation ofreligious works."Of the 795 titles translated by Protestantmissionaries between 1810 and 1867, 86% were in religion, andonly 6% in the humanities and sciences."[7] These publicationshad little cultural impact on China. Then the emphasis shifted toscience, technology and the military arts. According to QianCunxun (Tsuen-hsiun Tsien), of 567 works published between1850 and 1899, 70% were in the applied and natural sciences. [8] In 1843, as soon as the port opened, the London MissionPress(Mohai shuguan)was founded, aiming at printing anddistributing the Chinese version of the Bibles. It soon became animportant translation centre as well. The London Mission Presswas joined by two American Presbyterian presses in the following yinshuguan),established in 1874.It introduced lithographicprinting and distributed many religious texts. The period also sawa boom in commercial publishing. Prominant here was the firm ofF. & C. Walsh (later becoming Kelly & Walsh, with its Chinesename Biefa yanghang) which started in the 1860s. It became aleading publisher in the Far East, specializing in books relating tothe area.
