  1 When asked which is his favorite school subject, Jason Abrams, 11, doesn't hesitate "Lunch !" The mischief in his voice gives away that he knows his answer will get a laugh. But his parents, Jane and Stuart, are concerned that Jason isn't taking school more seriously. They wonder if their son's marks —— good but not outstanding —— might keep him from getting accepted intoan advanced programme. "You want the best for your kids" says Jane. "We know Jason could do better if he applied himself. "  2 But could he.'? " Most parents make well-meant efforts to set high goals to motivate and stimulate their children's learning and good behaviour," observes Sam Goldstein, a psychologist specializing in child development at the University of Utah. "But many don't understand their own child's limitations or strengths. "   3 In fact, many potentialities and limitations —— in intelligence, temperament and mental health —— are laid down prior to birth, says David Cohen, a recently retired psychology professor at theUniversity of Texas. We may want our son or daughter to do better than we did at thesame age, but if it's not in the cards, or coaxing will move them much beyond their natural gift. In fact, the pressure may have the opposite effect.  4 Goldstein talks of Stdly, a shy eight-year-old whose mother was also quite as a child but hoped to help her daughter become more outgoing "Telling a child of this makeup to make friends is equivalent to asking a child unable to float to swim in two-metre-deep water!" Her mum's exhortations only added to Sally's anxiety.   ……
