Much criticism dealing with Beckett‘s work has elaborated upon his late-Modernist position where language is seen to struggle against silence. Yet the discourse of Beckett’s work, in drama and in prose, as it was received during his lifetime, was a continuous narrative construed from the obli-gation towards speech and, consequently, writing. This, of course, would always be tempered by the repeated Beckettian paradigm of impotence. Beckett‘s was an art of impending silence, coupled with the obligation to overcome that silence. This reading gives Beckett and Beckett’s work some-thing of a stoic dignity, as it survives against all odds. Yet what has bet:n rarely noted, despite the persistent return by Beckett‘s readers to early critical works as supposed manifestoes of intent, is that these odds have been deliberately weighted against Beckett, by Beckett himself. Where obligation and impotence work together, as Beckett first sets out in the Tbree dralogues witb Georges Dutbuit, we may perceive not only a struggle towards expression, but also one, equally powerful, against expression: ……
