本書是《劍橋文學(xué)指南》叢書中的一種。是一本由英國(guó)著名莎學(xué)家，國(guó)際莎士比亞學(xué)會(huì)主席Stanley Wells主編，由伯明翰大學(xué)莎士比亞學(xué)院、里茲大學(xué)、哈佛大學(xué)、耶魯大學(xué)、波恩大學(xué)、巴黎大學(xué)等學(xué)校19名教授撰稿的論文集。該論文集是繼劍橋大學(xué)出版社1971年版《新莎士比亞研究指南》以來(lái)，西方莎士比亞研究領(lǐng)域的又一成果。本書共收錄論文17篇，系統(tǒng)地闡述和研究了莎士比亞生平、莎士比亞及其時(shí)代的思想、莎士比亞時(shí)代的劇場(chǎng)與演員、莎士比亞喜劇與悲劇的傳統(tǒng)、莎土比亞再版本，對(duì)于了解當(dāng)代西方莎學(xué)的進(jìn)展有著不可替代的價(jià)值。本書的出版，是西方莎士比亞研究的一個(gè)新的里程碑。
