總是希望和周圍的朋友攀比，這是人類的一大弱點。如果他們有錢，我們也希望有錢。如果他們很窮，那么我們也不在乎同樣受窮。我們不會因為自己的愚蠢而羞愧，我們只會因為比周圍的朋友更蠢才感到羞愧。這就是“人比人”的問題。     其實這里還有“往前看”的問題。我們無所謂錯過什么，假如從未期待擁有。我們也不會因為貧窮而失望，既然我們不曾指望富有。     匹普又窮又沒受過什么教育，但好在他的朋友們也都一樣。對他們來說，這并沒有什么；這就是生活的本來面目。然而，一旦匹普得知他有“遠(yuǎn)大前程”，他開始不再安分了。     他羞于與自己的伙伴們?yōu)槲?，他甚至還自慚形穢。他的“前程”顯然有摧毀他的生活的“危險”。    《遠(yuǎn)大前程》是狄更斯最成熟的作品之一，是他比較晚期的作品，狄更斯經(jīng)歷了豐富的人間生活后，對人、周圍環(huán)境、對自己的生活經(jīng)歷都有了深刻的認(rèn)識，而所有他成熟的思想認(rèn)識都匯總在《遠(yuǎn)大前程》一書中。    在這本書里，他以他慣有平易、幽默和筆調(diào)，敘述了少年皮普的愛情歷險。皮普本來一心一意地想過一種簡單的生活——做鐵匠，可是一次偶然的相遇，他被一位有錢而孤僻的老小姐選中，她讓他發(fā)現(xiàn)了另一個世界。老小姐的誘餌——美女埃絲苔娜幾乎就是那個世界的典型：美貌、傲慢而又有點冷酷。皮普開始了漫長的相思和苦苦的追求……
