前言
陳大明博士的專著《斯摩萊特的小說中游記元素的文類分析——兼與他的比較》即將出版,這是作者集多年文學(xué)與語言學(xué)功底和在北京大學(xué)攻讀l 8世紀(jì)文學(xué)博士學(xué)位的數(shù)年鉆研心得而寫成的,它不僅是我國(guó)18世紀(jì)英國(guó)文學(xué)研究的可喜成果,而且是我們國(guó)內(nèi)迄今出版的對(duì)英國(guó)著名小說家斯摩萊特和他這部杰作的第一部富有規(guī)模、有深度的專著。 長(zhǎng)期以來,甚至?xí)r至今日,我國(guó)對(duì)英國(guó)社會(huì)轉(zhuǎn)型和資本主義崛起的18世紀(jì)和它的社會(huì)、文化及文學(xué)的研究嚴(yán)重地滯后于歐洲和美國(guó)。20世紀(jì)后期是多元文化和文學(xué)理論興盛之時(shí),英國(guó)18世紀(jì)的政治和經(jīng)濟(jì)及美學(xué)思想、社會(huì)現(xiàn)象和文學(xué)作品成為各派理論解讀的熱門對(duì)象。學(xué)者們發(fā)現(xiàn)這是一片被忽視了的沃土,研究18世紀(jì)英國(guó)思想、文化和文學(xué)對(duì)當(dāng)今社會(huì)的發(fā)展有重要借鑒意義。17世紀(jì)末洛克的經(jīng)驗(yàn)主義理論引發(fā)了18世紀(jì)英國(guó)的哲學(xué)和文化思潮,后來伯克的政治主張,他和沙夫茨伯里的美學(xué)理論,蘇格蘭的啟蒙運(yùn)動(dòng)、道德哲學(xué),亞當(dāng)·斯密的自由經(jīng)濟(jì)理論等,這些都對(duì)西方資本主義形成、繁榮以及社會(huì)秩序和道德規(guī)范的樹立和維系起到了至關(guān)重要的作用。當(dāng)前,我國(guó)正在大力建設(shè)有中國(guó)特色的社會(huì)主義市場(chǎng)經(jīng)濟(jì),借鑒18世紀(jì)英國(guó)上升時(shí)期的思想文化,我以為比延續(xù)和停留在過去批判資本主義,特別是批判19世紀(jì)之后的英國(guó)資本主義和帝國(guó)主義的種種弊端,更具有現(xiàn)實(shí)意義。

陳大明,(1957-),1983年畢業(yè)于湖南師范學(xué)院,獲文學(xué)學(xué)士學(xué)位;1989年畢業(yè)于北京大學(xué)英語系.獲文學(xué)碩士學(xué)位;1990至1991年在新西蘭維多利亞大學(xué)語言學(xué)系修語言學(xué)研究生課程,獲語言學(xué)文憑證書:2007年畢業(yè)于北京大學(xué)外國(guó)語學(xué)院.獲文學(xué)博士學(xué)位?,F(xiàn)任北京理工大學(xué)外國(guó)語學(xué)院教授,多年受聘于教育部學(xué)位與研究生教育發(fā)展中心參與和主持多項(xiàng)試卷命題工作,現(xiàn)為教育部外語專業(yè)教學(xué)指導(dǎo)委員會(huì)英語分委員會(huì)委員?! 〗┠陙?,在國(guó)家核心期刊《國(guó)外文學(xué)》、《中國(guó)考試》和其他重要期刊以第一作者身份發(fā)表論文20余篇,主編出版《博士研究生英語綜合教程》等教材和教學(xué)大綱12部。參與編寫了《同等學(xué)力人員申請(qǐng)碩士學(xué)位英語水平全國(guó)統(tǒng)一考試大綱》、全國(guó)哲學(xué)社會(huì)科學(xué)“八五”規(guī)劃重點(diǎn)項(xiàng)目《歐洲文學(xué)史》;主持編寫了《在職攻讀碩士學(xué)位全國(guó)聯(lián)考英語考試大綱》、《全國(guó)工程碩士研究生入學(xué)考試英語考試大綱》和《全國(guó)工程碩士專業(yè)學(xué)位研究生考試英語教學(xué)大綱》等。

1.1 Nonfiction About those dominant aspects of travel narrative, Vivrs raises doubts, someof which are close to those discussed and dismissed as "non-dominant aspects" by Borm and some are really Vivrss own. First, about nonfiction, Vivirs thinks: "Thetravel narrative can hardly be reduced to a mere record of notes taken daily following the chronology of the travels themselves" (102). Later Vivrs takesnonfiction as "objectivity" and opposes it to "subjectivity" which is called "fiction"in Borms term. Vivirs claims: "Another criterion that can be dismissed along with the others is the one that supposes the travel journal to fall within the category of objectivity, compared to the novel which is ranked within the category of subjectivity" (102). All along, Vivrs discusses travel narrative with such typical works as James Boswells An Account of Corsica and Smolletts Travels, believing that the two travel narratives are doubtlessly intermingled with subjectivity. Hesays: "Boswells text obviously veers off such a path when he sings the praises ofCorsica and its General. Smolletts Travels decry France more than they describeit" (102). In Vivirss argument, both Boswell and Smollett have already personalized their descriptions with their own "sense of judgment." He explains:"The travellers, moreover, are rarely professional historians or geographers:Boswell had been trained as a barrister, while Smollett was originally a surgeon.They view the countries they visit from a highly personal angle, never applying astudied method of observation. They never deal in pure facts, whatever this mayactually mean in practice" (102).
