According to the recordof Jingchu Chronicle, "On the 105th dayafter the winter solstice, storms wouldoften occur, hence the name of Hanshiand the three-day forbidding of build-ing a fire." From this we can see thiscustom was already observed in an-cient times. The origin of Hanshi comesfrom a popular legend that Jie Zituiwould rather get burnt than take anofficial position. It is said that duringthe Spring and Autumn Period（770BC-476 BC） Duke Xian of the state ofJin wanted to pass on his throne to XiQi, the son of his favorite concubine,so he killed the prince Shen Sheng.Shen Sheng's brother, Chong Er, wasforced into exile, where he enduredmany hardships. Once, in order tohelp Chong Er out of the torment ofhunger, his faithful follower Jie Zioai,cut off a piece of flesh from his thighand offered it to him for sustenance.
