版權(quán)頁：插圖：Another story says the twelve animals are selected because Emperor Xuanyuansummoned twelve animals to be his imperial bodyguards.Though the cat and rat were close friends at that time.the rat tricked the cat out ofgoing，and ever since the cat has become the rat’S natural enemy.The rat then climbedinto the trunk of the elephant，who failed to report to Emperor Xuanyuan since it hadbeen badly injured.The rat also played a trick on the OX.The rat told the OX to let himjump onto his back SO that he COuld sing a song for him，and the OX agreed.Since the OXwas very strong it took the lead，together with the rat on its back.Then the rat jumpedahead of him near the signing post and claimed the first place.Since both the tiger and dragon considered themselves the strongest animals，they refused to accept the result.To pacify them，Emperor Xuanyuan granted them titles of“King of the Mountain’’and“King of the Ocean”，and they were added to the zodiac immediately after the rat and the OX.Then the rabbit challenged the result，too，SO a race was organized and，surprisingly,the rabbit beat the dragon for the fourth place.The pig，busy complaining about this，came last.The dog was not happy since such a small animal as the rabbit should be put in the fourth place.It bit the rabbit，and was punished with penultimate place.The other animals filled the other positions in the order they had arrived.
