章節(jié)摘錄
On a more metaphysical level, loneliness constitutes an important subject in various forms of art, including painting, music, psychology, philosophy and especially literature. In literature, loneliness is an eternal topic, especially for Romantics andModernists. Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand points out in hisGenie du Christianisrne(1802)that Romanticist literature is supposed to be marked by a certain“melancholy“and to present thepain of a vague yearning for someone and the sense of loneliness. In modern literature; loneliness resulting from man's alienationand estrangement from the world can be trequently encountered, occupying an important place in the exploration of man's innerworld. Modernists tend to believe that man is born alone anddies alone, with a life lived in constant loneliness. In poetry, aswell as other literary genres, loneliness has been an obsessingnote,as Thomas Parkingson has observed that the subject of poetry is loneliness. Loneliness brings along isolation and estrangement, but,in the meantime, provokes aesthetic satisfaction andmeditative impulses. Accordingly, the solitary self is frequentlyconsidered the source of spiritual power and literary inspiration. Emily Dickinson has not expected that, decades after herdeath, her poetry and the poet herself could have been“rediscovered“and brought back to life, and since then have been increasingly acclaimed and valued. William Dean Howells is among theearly critics who have identified the talents in Dickinson's poetry:“in the work of Emily Dickinson,America,or New Englandrather, had made a distinctive addition to the literature of theworld, and could not be left out of any record of it“(318),whileConrad Aiken rates her works as“perhaps the finest poetry by awoman in the English Language“(“Emily Dickinson“8).
