作者簡(jiǎn)介

　　簡(jiǎn)·奧斯汀出生于英國(guó)鄉(xiāng)村小鎮(zhèn)史蒂文頓，父親是位學(xué)問(wèn)淵博的牧師，母親出身于比較富有的家庭，也具有一定的文化修養(yǎng)。因此，奧斯汀雖然沒(méi)有上過(guò)正規(guī)學(xué)校，但是家庭的優(yōu)良條件和讀書(shū)環(huán)境給她提供了自學(xué)的便利，培養(yǎng)了她寫(xiě)作的興趣。 　　《理智與情感》初稿寫(xiě)成于1795年，后來(lái)幾經(jīng)修改，過(guò)了十多年才出版，是奧斯汀最富于幽默情趣的作品之一。其他著名作品還有《傲慢與偏見(jiàn)》、《曼斯菲爾德花園》、《愛(ài)瑪》、《諾桑覺(jué)寺》和《勸導(dǎo)》。其中最后兩部是她病逝以后由哥哥亨利負(fù)責(zé)出版的，并且開(kāi)始使用簡(jiǎn)·奧斯汀這個(gè)真名。 　　奧斯汀終生未婚，居住在恬靜的鄉(xiāng)村小鎮(zhèn)，接觸到的是小地主鄉(xiāng)紳、牧師等人物，因而她的作品中沒(méi)有重大的社會(huì)沖突。她以女性特有的細(xì)致入微的觀察力，真實(shí)地描繪了她周?chē)男√斓?，尤其是紳士淑女間的愛(ài)情和婚姻風(fēng)波，格調(diào)輕松詼諧，深受讀者歡迎。

　　Elinor could have given her immediate relief by suggesting thepossibility of its being Miss Mortons mother, rather than her own, whomthey were about to behold; but instead of doing that, she assured her, andwith great sincerity, that she did pity her,——to the utter amazement of Lucy,who, though really uncomfortable herself, hoped at least to be an object ofirrepressible envy to Elinor.　　Mrs Ferrars was a little, thin woman, upright, even to formality, inher figure, and serious, even to sourness, in her aspect. Her complexionwas sallow; and her features small, without beauty, and naturallywithout expression; but a lucky contraction of the brow had rescuedher countenance from the disgrace of insipidity, by giving it the strongcharacters of pride and ill-nature. She was not a woman of many words:for, unlike people in general, she proportioned them to the number of herideas; and of the few syllables that did escape her, not one fell to the shareof Miss Dashwood, whom she eyed with the spirited determination ofdisliking her at all events.　　Elinor could not now be made unhappy by this behaviour.——A fewmonths ago it would have hurt her exceedingly; but it was not in MrsFerrarss power to distress her by it now;——and the difference of hermanners to the Miss Steeles, a difference which seemed purposely madeto humble her more, only amused her.
