作者簡(jiǎn)介

　　埃德加·愛(ài)倫·坡 （Edgar Allan Poe, 1809--1849）
　　美國(guó)詩(shī)人、小說(shuō)家和文學(xué)評(píng)論家。 
　　坡一生命途多舛。三歲成為孤兒，被愛(ài)倫一家收養(yǎng)，所以后來(lái)他將愛(ài)倫作為自己的中間名。大學(xué)肄業(yè)后，坡曾過(guò)短暫的軍旅生涯，后長(zhǎng)期以編輯為業(yè)，雖然不斷有作品陸續(xù)發(fā)表，但一直窮愁潦倒。 
　　作為詩(shī)人，坡創(chuàng)作了一批舉世推崇的詩(shī)篇，如《烏鴉》、《鐘聲》和《致海倫》等，這些詩(shī)作具有純粹的文學(xué)音樂(lè)美，至情流露，經(jīng)貿(mào)不衰；作為小說(shuō)家，他被譽(yù)為偵探小說(shuō)鼻祖、恐怖小說(shuō)大師、短篇哥特式小說(shuō)的巔峰、科幻小說(shuō)和象征主義先驅(qū)之一，代表作包括《莫格街兇殺案》、《黑貓》和《威廉·威爾遜》等；作為評(píng)論家，他對(duì)狄更斯、朗費(fèi)羅、華茲華斯等作品的評(píng)論都闡示了精辟的見(jiàn)解，而且他的評(píng)論旗幟鮮明，絕不因人而褒獎(jiǎng)，對(duì)美國(guó)當(dāng)時(shí)批評(píng)家和出版商相勾結(jié)的文壇無(wú)疑起了正本清源、振聾發(fā)聵的作用。

There is no method intheir proceedings, beyond the method of the moment. Theymake a vast parade of measures; but, not unfrequently, theseare so ill adapted to the objects proposed, as to put us in mindof Monsieur Jourdain's calling for his robe-de-chambre——pourmieux entendre la musique. The results attained by them arenot infrequently surprising, but, for the most part, are broughtabout by simple diligence and activity. When these qualitiesare unavailing, their schemes fail. Vidocq, for example, was agood guesser, and a persevering man. But, without educatedthought, he erred continually by the very intensity of hisinvestigations. He impaired his vision by holding the objecttoo close. He might see, perhaps, one or two points withunusual clearness, but in so doing he, necessarily; lost sight ofthe matter as a whole. Thus there is such a thing as being tooprofound. Truth is not always in a well. In fact, as regards themore important knowledge, I do believe that she is invariablysuperficial. Tlae depth lies in the valleys where we seek her,and not upon the mountain-tops where she is found. Themodes and sources of this kind of error are well typified inthe contemplation of the heavenly bodies.
