前言
This is the ABC of American postmodemist fiction that may be used as atextbook for graduate students at college level.Almost no selected readings with the variety of American postmodemistfiction appeared in our country before now. Nor can we find a single writeror a work of its kind was included in the anthologies for college students'extensive and intensive readings compiled some years ago. But many teachersand students hope to read and understand them. This book will meet theirrequirements and help them bridge the gap between the period of the 1950sand the new millennium until the present in contemporary American literature.About 49 years have passed since the publication of Heller's Catch-22that marks the beginning of the new stage of postmodernist fiction in thehistory of American literature. The American postmodemist authors have madenumerous innovations and experiments in their works both in content andform. They have brought great changes in artistic device, style and language.Their successful experiments become a great contribution to the developmentof American fiction, which eventually came out of the great crisis in the 1960s.Many of them such as Pynchon, Vonnegut, Nabokov, Gass, Gaddis, DeLillo,Doctorow, Didion, Mailer, Sukenick, Morrison, Reed, Maxine Hong Kingston,Vollmann, and Powers are well-known home and abroad. Their novels havebeen translated into many languages. They have occupied a salient place in thehistory of American literature.Attractive to instructors and graduate students at almost all the Americanuniversities, American postmodernist fiction has become the hot point for classdiscussion since the 1990s. Its novels and short stories are often selected asteaching materials for graduates and undergraduates at different levels, andhave turned out to be students' favorites both in and out of classroom.

I don't think so."Milo nodded with spurious vim to indicate he still understood and thensat silent, ruminating gravely with troubled misgiving. A scarlet-crested birdshot by below, brushing sure dark wings against a quivering bush. Yossarianand Milo were covered in their bower by tissue-thin tiers of sloping greenand largely surrounded by other gray chestnut trees and a silver spruce. Thesun was high overhead in a vast sapphire-blue sky beaded with low, isolated, puffy clouds of dry and immaculate white. There was no breeze, and the leavesabout them hung motionless. The shade was feathery. Everything was at peacebut Milo, who straightened suddenly with a muffled cry and began pointingexcitedly. "Look at that!" he exclaimed in alarm. "Look at that! That's a funeralgoing on down there. That looks like the cemetery. Isn't it?" Yossarian answered him slowly in a level voice. "They're burying thatkid who got killed in my plane over Avignon the other day. Snowden." "What happened to him?" Milo asked in a voice deadened with awe. "lie got killed." "That's terrible," Milo grieved, and his large brown eyes filled withtears. "That poor kid. It really is terrible." He bit his trembling lip hard, andhis voice rose with emotion when he continued. "And it will get even worse ifthe mess halls don't agree to buy my cotton. Yossarian, what's the matter withthem? Don't they realize it's their syndicate? Don't they know they've all got ashare?" "Did the dead man in my tent have a share?" Yossarian demandedcaustically. "Of course he did," Milo assured him lavishly. "Everybody in thesquadron has a share." "He was killed before he even got into the squadron." Milo made a deft grimace of tribulation and turned away. "I wish you'dstop picking on me about that dead man in your tent," he pleaded peevishly. "Itold you I didn't have anything to do with killing him. Is it my fault that I sawthis great opportunity to comer the market on Egyptian cotton and got us intoall this trouble?
