前言

　　美國文學(xué)只有200多年的歷史，與源遠(yuǎn)流長的歐洲文學(xué)相比，還十分年輕。但通過短短兩個(gè)世紀(jì)的發(fā)展，美國文學(xué)已經(jīng)確立了自身的民族及美學(xué)特色，崛起為世界文學(xué)中的一支勁旅，其成就為世人所矚目。本書為一本原文選讀，而全部為原文的外國文學(xué)選讀在國內(nèi)還不多見。選讀內(nèi)容涵蓋了美國文學(xué)的全過程，即從美國文學(xué)發(fā)展的初期至20世紀(jì)80年代。選讀的對(duì)象為大學(xué)英語專業(yè)高年級(jí)學(xué)生、研究生及有英語基礎(chǔ)的美國文學(xué)愛好者，可以用作教材，也可用作讀本。目的在于介紹美國文學(xué)經(jīng)典作品，為我國讀者理解美國文學(xué)以及文化提供一定的指導(dǎo)和幫助，以提高讀者的文學(xué)閱讀水平、鑒賞能力和人文素養(yǎng)。　　本選讀根據(jù)美國文學(xué)較為明顯的歷史分期分為上下兩卷，以美國文學(xué)發(fā)展初期到19世紀(jì)末的作品為上卷，20世紀(jì)美國文學(xué)為下卷。本書為上卷，收入20位重要美國作家的作品，所選作品以小說和詩歌為主?！　?9世紀(jì)為美國人建立自己的民族文學(xué)的重要發(fā)展時(shí)期，有許多膾炙人口的精品。本書旨在呈現(xiàn)文學(xué)作品本身，不強(qiáng)求將之歸類，因此不以時(shí)代和文學(xué)流派進(jìn)行編排。為幫助讀者更好地理解所學(xué)習(xí)和閱讀的作品，編者在選擇作品時(shí)著重考慮經(jīng)典性和完整性。所選篇目都是經(jīng)典作家的經(jīng)典作品；凡是能夠找到可以反映作家思想和寫作風(fēng)格的短篇，一般便不再使用長篇作品中的節(jié)選，以保持作品的完整性。

本書收入了從美國文學(xué)發(fā)展初期到19世紀(jì)末20位美國著名作家的作品，所選作品以小說和詩歌為主。目的在于介紹美國文學(xué)經(jīng)典作品，為我國讀者理解美國文學(xué)以及文化提供一定的指導(dǎo)和幫助，以提高讀者的文學(xué)閱讀水平，鑒賞能力和人文素養(yǎng)。

作者簡介

　　金莉，1954年3月出生于山東青島。1982年畢業(yè)于山東大學(xué)外文系，獲學(xué)士學(xué)位。大學(xué)期間曾在加拿大多倫多大學(xué)就讀兩年。1986年在北京外國語大學(xué)獲碩士學(xué)位后留校任教。1990至1993年在美國德克薩斯州克雷斯頓大學(xué)攻讀博士學(xué)位，1994年回國任教，2000年評(píng)為教授。2000至2001年作為富布賴特訪問學(xué)者在美國耶魯大學(xué)進(jìn)修。現(xiàn)任北京外國語大學(xué)英語學(xué)院副院長?！　≈饕芯款I(lǐng)域?yàn)?9世紀(jì)美國小說與婦女文學(xué)，回國后曾在《外國文學(xué)評(píng)論》、《外國文學(xué)》、《美國研究》上發(fā)表數(shù)篇論文。并出版了學(xué)?？蒲许?xiàng)目《美國文學(xué)》一書，還參與了社科院九五科研項(xiàng)目《20世紀(jì)世界文學(xué)史》以及學(xué)?？蒲许?xiàng)目《美國文學(xué)選集》的編寫工作。任商務(wù)印書館出版的《新時(shí)代漢英大詞典》副主編，現(xiàn)任由外語教學(xué)與研究出版社出版的《漢英詞典》修訂版副主編。　　曾獲北京市第五屆哲學(xué)社會(huì)科學(xué)優(yōu)秀成果獎(jiǎng)二等獎(jiǎng)和1998年度華為獎(jiǎng)教金?，F(xiàn)擔(dān)任北京市人大代表、《外國文學(xué)》雜志編委、《英語學(xué)習(xí)》雜志編委。

　　From Self-Reliance　　Trust thyself： every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept theplace the divine providence has found for you， the society of yourcontemporaries， the connection of events. Great men have alwaysdone so， and confided themselves childlike to the genius of theirage， betraying their perception that the absolutely trustworthy wasseated at their heart， working through their hands， predominatingin all their being. And we are now men， and must accept in thehighest mind the same transcendant destiny; and not minorsand invalids in a protected corner， not cowards fleeing before arevolution， but guides， redeemers and benefactors， obeying theAlmighty effort and advancing on Chaos and the Dark.　　What pretty oracles nature yields us on this text in the face andbehavior of children， babes， and even brutes！ That divided andrebel mind， that distrust of a sentiment because our arithmetic hascomputed the strength and means opposed to our purpose， thesehave not. Their mind being whole， their eye is as yet unconquered，and when we look in their faces we are disconcerted. Infancyconforms to nobody; all conform to it; so that one babe commonlymakes four or five out of the adults who prattle and play to it.
