The purpose of this thirdedition of Teaching English asa Second or Foreign Language,also known as "the AppleBook," remains the same asthe first (1979) and second(1991) editions: to producea comprehensive introduc-tion to the profession ofteaching English to speakers of other languages.The goal has been to maintain a balancebetween theory and practice——between provid-ing necessary background information and rele-vant research, on the one hand, and offeringmany classroom suggestions and resources forteachers, on the other. This edition covers theareas I believe to be critical to successful lan-guage instruction: knowledge of past and pres-ent teaching approaches, background on andtechniques for teaching the language skills, vari-ous options for integrating the skills, awarenessof important learner factors, and informationthat is useful for the classroom teachers everydayperformance and professional growth. I havetried to produce an introduction to the field thatwould be of sufficient depth and breadth to besuitable for students with some previous teachingexperience, yet straightforward enough not toneedlessly bewilder the novice.
