　　序言　　The ninth edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary is 14 per cent larger than the eighth and it takes further the changes in methodology and presentation that wereintroduced in its predecessor．These changes were in two main areas：firstly，the use of computer technology；and secondly，the aim of making the information contained in the dictionary more accessible to the user．　　《牛津簡(jiǎn)明英語詞典》第9版比第8版的內(nèi)容增加了14％；同時(shí)，第9版在編纂方法及表述方面均比前一版作了進(jìn)一步的改進(jìn)。改進(jìn)主要體現(xiàn)在兩個(gè)方面：其一，使用了計(jì)算機(jī)技術(shù)；其二，讀者更容易查閱詞典所含的信息?！　ith regard to the use of computer technology，the COD has benfited in this edition not only from the availability of the previous edition in the form of an electronically tegged database，but from access to large bodies of corpus and citational　evidence．The British National Corpus，a database containing over100，000，000　words of text，has been the most significant of these，together with the OUP Dictionary Department’s vast computerized collection of selected citations and its other computerized dictionary texts including the twenty-volume Oxfrd English Dictionary.The gathering of evidence for new words and usages has been greatly enhanced by electronic access to these sources， and me dicuonary is now able to incorporate more quickly and reflect more accurately changes that have arisen in the language since the previous edition，with additions being made to the text right up to time of printing．As a result，this edition contains over 7，000 new words and senses in a wide variety of areas．For example，the growing availability of international cuisine in Britain and elsewhere is refelcted by the use in English of terms such as bhaji，fajita，gravlax， penne，sharon fruit，and many others；in the fiele of politics we have dream ticket，Euro-rebel， placeman，rainbow coalition，and spin doctor;in ecology new terms such as arcology，carr，ecocide，greening，and wind farm have arisen; in science and medicine，blue box，bronchodilator，Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease，F(xiàn)eynman diagram，hyperspace，nicad，packet switching，repetitive strain injury，and wormhole.　　在使用計(jì)算機(jī)技術(shù)方面，本版{牛津簡(jiǎn)明英語詞典》不僅獲益于可使用第8版的電子標(biāo)簽式數(shù)據(jù)庫(kù)，而且也獲益于可應(yīng)用多個(gè)大型語料庫(kù)存儲(chǔ)的大量語料和引文。其中，最為重要的是英國(guó)國(guó)家語料庫(kù)，它的數(shù)據(jù)庫(kù)有1億多個(gè)文本詞匯。一起使用的還有牛津大學(xué)出版社詞典部在計(jì)算機(jī)中存儲(chǔ)的大量精選引文以及該部計(jì)算機(jī)存儲(chǔ)的其他詞典文本，包括20卷本的《牛津英語詞典》。由于可以通過電子存取這些資料，新詞和新用法的收集工作大為加強(qiáng)?，F(xiàn)在，詞典可以更迅速地收入并且更準(zhǔn)確地反映自上一版以來語言所發(fā)生的變化，內(nèi)容可以不斷增加直至付梓之時(shí)。其結(jié)果是，本版增加了各個(gè)領(lǐng)域的新詞和新義7，000條。例如，在英國(guó)和其他地方越來越容易品嘗到世界各國(guó)的菜肴，這一現(xiàn)象反映在英語中一些名稱的使用上，例如bhaji、fajita、gravlax、penne和sharo fruit等；在政治領(lǐng)域，我們有dream ticket、Euro-rebel、placeman、rainbow coalition和spin doctor；在生態(tài)領(lǐng)域有arcology、carr、eeocide、greening、wind farm等新術(shù)語；在科學(xué)和醫(yī)學(xué)領(lǐng)域，新詞有blue box、bronchodilator、Creutzfeldt—Jakob disease、Feynman diagram、hyperspace、nicad、packet switching、repetitive strain injury和wormhole等等?！　　?/pre>
