前言

內(nèi)容概要

《高級英語》（上、下冊）是根據(jù)全國高等教育自學考試指導委員會制定的《高等教育自學考試英語專業(yè)考試計劃》（試行）對于“高級英語”課程所規(guī)定的任務編寫的。\n    “高級英語”課程的重點是：一、提高詞匯運用和閱讀理解能力，即能掌握和使用所學的詞匯，特別是同義詞、近義詞的區(qū)分和使用，正確理解文章的內(nèi)容和主題思想，抓住文章的要點，分析文章的結(jié)構(gòu)、語言技巧和修辭特點。二、提高語言表達能力，即能用英語解釋，用漢語翻譯文章中的難句，使用英語歸納文章的主題思想，對文章進行簡單的分析、評論。\n    學生的學習

　　These conclusions strike me as reasonable，at least from theirpoint of view.The relevant question for the arriving generation is notwhether our society is imperfect（we can take that for granted），buthow to deal with it.For all its harshness and irrationality，it is theonly world we’ve got.Choosing a strategy to cope with it，then，isthe first decision young adults have to make，and usually the mostimportant decision of their lifetime.So far as I have been able to dis-cover，there are only four basi calternatives：I Drop out　　This is one of the oldest expedients，and it can be practiced any-where，at any age，and with or without the use cf hallucinogens.Italways has been the strategy of choice for people who find the worldtoo brutal or too complex to be endured.By definition，this way oflife is parasitic.In one way or another，its practitioners batten on thesociety which they scorn and in which they refuse to take any respon.sibility.Some of US find this distasteful——an undignified kind of life.But for the poor in spirit，with low levels of both energy and pride，itmay be the least intolerable choice available.This strategy also has ancient antecedents.Ever since civilizationbegan，certain individuals have tried to run away from it in hopes offinding a simpler，more pastoral，and more peaceful life.Unlike thedropouts，they are not parasites.They are willing to support them－selves and to contribute something to the general community.
