章節(jié)摘錄
"Oh, yes, but he has no coat or head, so all that talk about the head of fire is wrong. You can't see him, only hear him; my mother knows!" Giry began to cry, thinking of how angry her mother would be if she knew she was speaking about him. "I should hold my tongue, but Joseph Buquet shouldn't talk about it—it will bring him bad luck!" There was the sound of quick and heavy footsteps in the corridor; then a voice cried, "Cecile! Cecile, are you in there?" "It's my mother," cried little Jammes. A big, respectable-looking lady burst into the dressing roomand dropped, groaning, into an easy chair. "Oh, how awful!" she said. "What is it? Tell us what has happened!" cried the girls. "It's Joseph Buquet. He's dead!" The room filled with cries of alarm as the scared girls beggedher for an explanation. "Yes, he was found hanging by his neck in the third-floorcellar!" "Oh, no, it must be the ghost!" little Giry cried. And all around her, the ballet-girls repeated: "Yes, yes, itmust be the ghost!" Sorelli turned pale and began to tremble."I'll never be ableto say my 'thank-you' speech now," she said. The truth is that no one ever knew how Joseph Buquet died.It was decided to have been a suicide, but the strange thing wasthat by the time the manager had hurried down the ladder tocut the body down, the rope had completely disappeared. M.Moncharmin decided the ballet-girls or some other dancersmust have taken it, perhaps in order to protect themselves frombad luck. However, it was difficult to imagine such pretty girlsrushing down to the cellars and dividing up a rope used tohang a man! Also, the body had been discovered right underthe stage! No, somebody else must have taken it. The terrible news soon traveled around the Opera. The dressingroom emptied as the ballet-girls, gathering around Sorelli likescared sheep, made their way to the foyer through the dark corridors, moving as fast as their little pink legs could take them! ……
