　　To bui1d a garden is to bui1d a paradise. As the tangib1e expression of wonder， gardens are intended to be peacefi11 retreats and resting p1aces for the sou1. Standing in the gardens， we not on1y see pavi1ions， pagodas， terraces， mountains， water， f1owers and grass，but a1so sense what Chinese peop1e of centuries past appreciated and be1ieved. From Taoism they took the concept of 1etting thingstake their own course， so they imitated the natura1 f1ow of rivers and 1akes.

作者簡(jiǎn)介

阮儀三，1934年生。同濟(jì)大學(xué)建筑與城市規(guī)劃學(xué)院教授、博士生導(dǎo)師；同濟(jì)大學(xué)國(guó)家歷史文化名城研究中心主任；全國(guó)歷史文化名城保護(hù)專家委員會(huì)委員。從事于城市規(guī)劃和歷史文化遺產(chǎn)保護(hù)研究，從1980年開始，促成了平遙古城和江南水鄉(xiāng)六鎮(zhèn)的保護(hù)與搶救，并參與蘇州、揚(yáng)州、紹興、安陽(yáng)、潮州、肇慶、上海等眾多的歷史文化名城的保護(hù)與規(guī)劃。著有《古城留跡》、《護(hù)城蹤錄》、《平遙》、《江南古鎮(zhèn)》、《名城鑒賞與保護(hù)》、《歷史名城保護(hù)理論與規(guī)劃》、《城市規(guī)劃基礎(chǔ)理論》等。
