版權(quán)頁(yè)：Informationalism has 'spread throughout the globe with lightning speed inless than two decades, between the mid-1970s and the mid-1990s' （2000: 32）.The informational economy is thus global. Castells defines a global econ-omy, distinguishing it from a world economy, as 'an economy with thecapacity to work as a unit in real time, or chosen time, on a planetary scale'（2000: 101）, and points out that 'while capitalism is characterized by itsrelentless expansion, always trying to overcome limits of time and space, itwas only in the late twentieth century that the world economy was able tobecome truly global on the basis of the new infrastructure provided byinformation and communication technologies' （2000: 101）. The global economywhich emerged in the 1990s is constituted by an informational core （financialmarkets, international trade, transnational production and specializedlabour）, but also by local or regional production disconnected from it, and isthus structured by asymmetry and inequality in its midst. Its basic unit is thenetwork: the global production of goods and services is increasingly notperformed by multinational corporations （which themselves have becomedecentralized internal networks） but by international production networks,composed of small and medium-sized firms in addition to multinationalcorporations （2000:121-22）.  Castells captures the new spatial organization of the informational societythrough the metaphor of the space of flows. The space of flows is character-ized by the fluid mobility between those places that are connected to globalnetworks and, at the same time, by spatial fragmentation and discontinuity:'the switched-off areas are culturally and spatially discontinuous: they are inthe American inner cities or in the French banlieues, as much as in theshanty towns of Africa or in the deprived rural areas of China or India'（2000: 33）. The fragmentation of the space of flows finds its expression in thenew industrial space, characterized by the technological ability to separatethe production process in different locations, as well as in mega-cities, whichare connected in a global network and increasingly less related to theirregions.  Castells shares with Lash and Urry a belief in the 'gigantic leap forward inthe reach and scope of the circulation sphere' （2000: 100） and points to theincreasing autonomy of global financial flows from their economies, a resultof the nature of informationalism. Thus, he asserts that 'money has becomealmost entirely independent from production, including the production ofservice, by escaping into the networks of higher-order electronic interactionsbarely understood by its managers' （2000: 505）.
