英國散文選讀

前言

　　對不少英語專業(yè)的學(xué)生來說，撰寫英語畢業(yè)論文是個難關(guān)。常?？梢钥吹綄W(xué)生們枯坐案頭，面對一個早已定下的題目，冥思苦想，久久無從落筆，其痛苦之狀著實令人同情。他們通常所遇到的一個困難是不知道如何論述自己的觀點（todeveloptheirideas）。這些思想活躍、目光敏銳的年輕人，不乏獨到的想法。這些想法如通過分析、比較、聯(lián)想、鑒別等手段加以擴(kuò)展，完全可以敷演成一篇很好的文章。但可惜我們的學(xué)生，往往三言兩語，戛然而止。倒不是他們不想把問題說透，而是缺乏這種論證的能力?？傆X得話已說盡，難以再加發(fā)揮了。一篇五六千字的英語論文，要寫到規(guī)定的長度似乎比登天還難。常常懷著焦急的心情，邊寫邊數(shù)，卻發(fā)現(xiàn)總未達(dá)到要求；有時為了湊足字?jǐn)?shù)不得不成段引用原文，將文章“放胖”（topadout），有的甚至大段抄襲國外學(xué)者的著作，甘冒剽竊（plagiarism）之大不韙。因此在畢業(yè)論文中，雖然也有觀點獨到、文思暢達(dá)、論述精當(dāng)?shù)纳铣酥?，但總的來說，并不太令人滿意。　　論文寫作中還存在著語言表達(dá)的困難。學(xué)生們無法分辨評論文與一般記敘文的文體差別，而一概以敘述語言甚至口語化的句子來寫文學(xué)評論，句子結(jié)構(gòu)單調(diào)呆板，缺少變化，從頭到尾幾乎都是主謂賓結(jié)構(gòu)句式，不懂得如何使用各類修飾語使文句搖曳多姿，富有感染力。某些學(xué)生通篇幼稚刻板的語句往往與一兩句（或一兩段）從別處抄來而未注明出處的句子（或段落）形成鮮明的對照，使教師可以輕而易舉地看出其中的破綻來。

　　Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Their chiefuse for delight,　is in privateness and retiring; for ornament,　is indiscourse; and for ability, is in the judgement and disposition of business ;for expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one byone ;3 but the general counsels, and the plots and marshaling of affairscome best from those that are learned.　To spend too much time instudies, is sloth; to use them too much for ornament, is affectation; tomake judgement only by their rules, is the humour of a scholar; theyperfect nature, and are perfected by experience; for natural abilities arelike natural plants, that need pruning by study; and studies themselves dogive forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in byexperience. Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, andwise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is awisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. Read notto contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted, nor to findtalk and discourse, but to weigh and consider.
