前言

Of course, it would be a mistake to sup-pose that there is more blind acceptance of bru-tal practices in organized football than elsewhere.On the contrary, a recent Harvard study has ap-provingly argued that footballs characteristics of"impersonal acceptance of inflicted injury," anoverriding "organization goal," the "ability to turnoneself on and off" and being, above all, "out towin" are of "inestimable value" to bigcorporations. Clearly, our sort of football is nosicker than the rest of our society. Even its orga-nized destruction of physical well-being is notanomalous. Avery large part of our wealth, workand time is, after all, spent in systematically de-stroying and harming human life. Manufacturing,selling and using weapons that tear opponents topieces. Making ever bigger and faster predator-named cars with which to kill and injure oneanother by the million every year. And devotingour very lives to outgunning one another forpower in an ever more destructive rat race. Yet allthese practices are accepted without question bymost people, even zealously defended andhonored. Competitive, organized injuring is in-tegral to our way of life, and football is simplyone of the more intelligible mirrors of the wholeprocess: a sort of colorful morality play showingus how exciting and rewarding it is to Smash ThyNeighbor3. Now it is fashionable to rationalize ourcollaboration in all this by arguing that, well,man l/kes to fight and injure his fellows and suchgames as football should be encouraged to dis-charge this original-sin urge into less harmfulchannels than, say, war. Public-show football,this line goes, plays the same sort of catharticrole as Aristotle said stage tragedy does: with-out real blood (or not much), it releases playersand audience-from unhealthy feelings stored upinside them.
