the next morning began a twelve-week walking tour of the continent. We went staffin hand, Wordsworth recalled more than fifty years later, without knapsacks, andcarrying each his needments tied up in a pocket handkerchief, with about twentypounds apiece in. our pockets. It was an intoxicating time to travel through France, for the country was, as Wordsworth put it in a letter to Dorothy, mad with joy inconsequence of the revolution. In May the previous year, King Louis XVI, in anattempt to maintain control over his debt-ridden country, had summoned hisparliament, the States-General, but by July had been forced to replace the States-General with a National Assembly, and absolute political power had passed out of thehands of the aristocracy. On 14 July, the Bastille, the Paris fortress which symbolisedthe old feudal order, had been stormed and destroyed. Wordsworth and Jones werestarting their walking tour on the very anniversary of this momentous event, whichhad come to mark the beginning of the French Revolution. As they left Calais, theFete de la F6d6ration was being celebrated in Paris, and the King was swearing anoath of allegiance to the new constitution.
Inspired by Englands Lake District, William Wordsworth (1770-1850)created some of the best-loved poems of the Romantic period. In The Preludehe described his youth and schooling, and the death of both his parentswhen he was just a child. Wordsworth was separated from his sister, Dorothy,at that time. but was reunited with her in 1795. Her private diaries and cher-ished companionship inspired many of his works, and she lived with herbrother and his family until his death. Together they formed a literary three-some with poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who lived near them for much oftheir lives. In this fascinating biography, the author traces the details of Wordsworthslife - his studies at Cambridge, his early travels in France and his passionatesupport of the French Revolution, his return to the Lake District, and hismarriage and children - that have such a presence in his autobiographicalpoems. Wordsworths work had a tremendous influence on his contempo-raries, such as Shelley and Keats, and on later generations of poets. This authoritative introduction to .Wordsworths life and work is filled with awide variety of photographs, portraits, and paintings, as well as originalmanuscripts from the British Library, the Wordsworth Trust, and othersources.
