A model ?。―r Coleman has just returned from his sabbatical leave. He is telling his wife about his experiencesduring that period.) Dr Colemans wife Honey, you look terrific. I believe now you can tell me how you spent yoursabbatical leave. Dr Coleman Oh, yeah. I have to say this is the most interesting experience Ive ever had.You know Ive spent almost my entire life in school and somehow I felt that Ineeded to see what the world is like outside the university, to learn aboutpeople, especially those who do hard physical work. So I decided to takeadvantage of this sabbatical leave to learn about the world of work.Dr Colemans wife But how?Dr Coleman Well, I went to Canada first and worked on a farm there. Every morning I gotup at 4:30 and worked thirteen hours a day in fields and barns. Then I wentdown to Atlanta and spent my time there digging ditches. I also washed dishesin a restaurant and even worked as a garbage collector for ten days. Dr Colemans wife That was quite an experience. But did any of your students or colleaguesknow what you were doing? Dr Coleman No. I tried to keep it a secret. Dr Colemans wife But did the people you met on these jobs ever have suspicions about you? Dr Coleman Not really. They might have thought I was a little different, but I bet theydidnt have the slightest idea that I was a college president. There was onlyone employer who sensed something unusual. That was at a restaurant inBoston. I had been on the job exactly an hour —— I was washing disheswhen the boss came over and said, "Im afraid you wont do," and handed metwo dollars. I asked him why, but he simply said, "It is not your work." Dr Colemans wife That mustve been the first time youve been turned down by an employer. Dr Coleman Youre right. But it helped me to understand how a man at my age might feelwhen he suddenly realized he had lost his job. Many of my colleagues wouldcomplain when the work was too heavy, but they would complain more whenthere was nothing to do. Dr Colemans wife Fortunately you were not in there for the money.Dr Coleman No. But I find that even with people who do physical work, what brings thegreatest satisfaction is praise from co-workers, not the pay, even though it isimportant to them. Dr Colemans wife Really?
