文化之重

前言

跨文化交際學(xué)是一門在傳播學(xué)等學(xué)科理論的基礎(chǔ)上，與人類學(xué)、心理學(xué)、語言學(xué)、文化學(xué)以及社會學(xué)等相互交叉而發(fā)展起來的學(xué)科。其實(shí)，不同文化問的交流古已有之，但是真正將文化交流進(jìn)行理論研究進(jìn)而發(fā)展成“跨文化交際學(xué)”，還只是近四五十年間的事情。想要深入探究這門學(xué)科，我們首先要了解它的起源。20世紀(jì)60年代是信息技術(shù)和交通技術(shù)高度發(fā)展的年代。隨著科技的進(jìn)步，空間距離大大縮短，各種文化問的交流日益頻繁。但是空間距離的縮小并不意味著人們之間的文化距離或是心理距離可以瞬間縮短。與之相反的是，人們不能再用舊有的文化觀念和思維方式來理解和解釋日新月異的世界里出現(xiàn)的各種新問題。同時(shí)，文化差異滋生眾多的交際失誤、矛盾和沖突，反而使人們的心理距離加大。矛盾和沖突的背后不僅僅是利益或者領(lǐng)土的爭奪，也不僅僅是政治和意識形態(tài)的分歧，而更多的是文化和價(jià)值觀念上的巨大隔閡——正是這些隔閡使“地球村”中的人們雖然身在“咫尺”之間，卻有如隔天涯之感。美國作為一個(gè)多民族、多種族的國家自然而然成為跨文化交際研究的興起之地，其中以美國人類學(xué)家Edward T.Hall為代表的一些學(xué)者在前人研究成果的基礎(chǔ)上提出了跨文化交際的理論，現(xiàn)在學(xué)界也一致將他的著作The Silent Language（Anchor Books，1959）當(dāng)作是這一學(xué)科的奠基之作。到了20世紀(jì)70、80年代，學(xué)者們把研究重點(diǎn)逐漸從對比和分析不同文化交際（Cross-cultural Communication）中的差異轉(zhuǎn)到研究跨文化交際（Intercultural Communication）動(dòng)態(tài)多變的過程中去。以此為基點(diǎn)，William B.Gudykunst等一批學(xué)者建構(gòu)了動(dòng)態(tài)的跨文化交際理論。理論的突破帶來了學(xué)科的快速發(fā)展，跨文化交際研究所涉及的學(xué)科越來越多，研究的內(nèi)容更加豐富，研究方法日益科學(xué)。學(xué)科的發(fā)展引起了世界各國學(xué)者空前廣泛的關(guān)注，跨文化交際學(xué)被引進(jìn)大學(xué)課堂，相關(guān)的研究學(xué)會和專業(yè)學(xué)刊相繼出現(xiàn)，各種國際學(xué)術(shù)研討會也定期舉行。現(xiàn)在只要在網(wǎng)上簡單查詢一下相關(guān)書目，我們就會發(fā)現(xiàn)此類專著多達(dá)幾百種，在刊物上發(fā)表的論文更是不勝枚舉。William B.Gudykunst曾在其著作Cross-cultural and Intercultural Communication（Sage Publications，2003）一書中總結(jié)了15種不同的跨文化交際理論。理論研究和探索上的巨大進(jìn)步標(biāo)志著跨文化交際學(xué)的學(xué)科發(fā)展日臻成熟。

內(nèi)容概要

吉爾特·霍夫斯坦德教授是國際社會科學(xué)刊物索引前百位最常被引用的作者之一，本書即是他的代表作。本書的第一版于1980年推出，旋即成為國際跨文化交際研究的暢銷經(jīng)典著作，其中提出的理論模式在世界范圍內(nèi)得到廣泛的應(yīng)用。本次引進(jìn)的是第二版。作者通過在五個(gè)文化維度上的對比和研究提出，人們的“心智程序”形成于童年，受到家庭影響，并在各種組織體制中得到強(qiáng)化。在第二版中，作者引入大量全新的文獻(xiàn)資料，深入研究了存在于50多個(gè)現(xiàn)代國家及其國民之間的思維和社會行為上的異同，將探索價(jià)值觀上國與國之間的差異，擴(kuò)大到了探索行為、體制和組織領(lǐng)域中國與國之間的差異，提升了本書的跨學(xué)科影響力。

Summary of This ChapterThis introductory chapter deals with the definition and measurement of mental programs in people in general， and values and culture in particular。 Mental programs can be found at the universal， collective， and individual levels。 In this chapter， I discuss four different strategies by which they can be measured。 Values can refer to the desired or to the desirable， and the two are not equivalent。 Culture is defined as collective programming of the mind； it manifests itself not only in values， but in more superficial ways： in symbols， heroes， and rituals。 In most of this book， I use the word culture to refer to national culture； only in Chapter 8 do I consider the cultures of other collectives-organizations and occupations。 A diagram suggests how national culture patterns are rooted in value systems of major groups of the population and how they are stabilized over long periods in history。 An earlier term for national culture is national character， but studies of national character often reflected observer biases and unfounded stereotypes。 The comparative study of national cultures calls for a certain amount of cultural relativism。The chapter then goes into specific methodological problems of the study of culture： The level of analysis shifts from the individual to society as a whole。 Pitfalls are the “ecological fallacy” and， even more， a “reverse ecological fallacy?！?The dangers of ethnocentrism and disciplinary parochialism are shown。 A multitude of disciplines contribute to the comparative study of national cultures。 Language and translation of re-search instruments are crucial， as is the matching of samples from the different cultures for functional equivalence。 Marginal phenomena in societies can be as meaningful for comparison as modal phenomena。
