前言
2004年1月,教育部頒布了《大學(xué)英語(yǔ)課程教學(xué)要求(試行)》,將大學(xué)英語(yǔ)的教學(xué)目標(biāo)確定為“培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的英語(yǔ)綜合應(yīng)用能力,特別是聽(tīng)說(shuō)能力,使他們?cè)诮窈蠊ぷ骱蜕鐣?huì)交往中能用英語(yǔ)有效地進(jìn)行口頭和書面的信息交流,同時(shí)增強(qiáng)其自主學(xué)習(xí)能力,提高綜合文化素養(yǎng),以適應(yīng)我國(guó)社會(huì)發(fā)展和國(guó)際交流的需要”,提出了分層次(即“一般要求”、“較高要求”和“更高要求”)和分類指導(dǎo)的教學(xué)要求。與此同時(shí),教育部在全國(guó)180所院校開(kāi)展多媒體網(wǎng)絡(luò)教學(xué)的試點(diǎn),推廣具有個(gè)性化學(xué)習(xí)特征的多媒體網(wǎng)絡(luò)教學(xué)系統(tǒng),并于2005年2月頒布了《全國(guó)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)四、六級(jí)考試改革方案(試行)》,2007年7月又下發(fā)了修訂后的《大學(xué)英語(yǔ)課程教學(xué)要求》。這些舉措進(jìn)一步推動(dòng)了我國(guó)高校大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教學(xué)全方位的改革和教學(xué)質(zhì)量的全面提升。新世紀(jì)的教學(xué)改革呼喚新的教材不斷誕生。這既是時(shí)代的召喚,也是歷史的必然?! ≌窃谶@樣的時(shí)代背景下,上海外語(yǔ)教育出版社于2004年初組織全國(guó)數(shù)十所高校啟動(dòng)了“新世紀(jì)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)系列教材”建設(shè)項(xiàng)目。項(xiàng)目開(kāi)始之初,外教社以書面問(wèn)卷、個(gè)別訪談和集體座談等形式在全國(guó)數(shù)十所高校中進(jìn)行了廣泛的調(diào)查研究,并請(qǐng)專家對(duì)編寫方案進(jìn)行了多次論證。在上海外語(yǔ)教育出版社莊智象社長(zhǎng)的直接領(lǐng)導(dǎo)和籌劃下,經(jīng)過(guò)三年多的努力,我們編寫了這套“新世紀(jì)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)系列教材”,力圖為新世紀(jì)形勢(shì)下的我國(guó)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材建設(shè)作出新的嘗試和努力。經(jīng)教育部認(rèn)定,這套教材已被列入“普通高等教育‘十一五’國(guó)家級(jí)規(guī)劃教材”。

Australia is a relatively safe place, something which surveys of overseas students have shown that they value greatly. As in most of the industrialized countries, Australia has experienced a serious economic recession making many people unemployed. This has caused a small in-crease in the amount of petty crime, but in comparison with the USA, UK or al-most anywhere else in the Western world the problem remains limited. The opportunity to work while studying in order to help cover expenses is one which overseas students welcome. Australia is comparatively generous in this regard, especially since changes in government policy in February 1991. All over-seas students, regardless of which country they come from and what they intend to study, may work for up to 20 hours per week during semesters and full-time during vacations and other course breaks. Part-time study is not permitted on a student visa. Finding work in a different country can be trying, and if it is essential for survival the pressure that it creates can be a worry. Most campuses maintain a part-time work agency, but the number of jobs available from varies place to place. Generally, it is not easy to find work at the moment be-cause Australia is experiencing an economic recession. More than half of Australias visiting students say that they take advantage of the right to work, but it is hard to know for certain how much they do or what they earn.
