How do I Love Thee?
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, — I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! — and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
首先,提出問題“How do I love thee?(我究竟是怎樣地愛你?)”,接下來就開始回答。
I shall but love thee。
在這份感情的開始,她說:“The chrism is on thine head,--on mine, the dew,--And Death must dug the level where these agree.(《葡萄牙人的十四行詩》第三首)”而在這首《How do I Love Thee?》中,最后,勃朗寧夫人說:“and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.”

You’ll Love Me Yet
—Robert Browning
You’ll love me yet!—and I can tarry Your love’s protracted growing: June reared that bunch of flowers you carry From seeds of April’s sowing. I plant a heartful now: some seed At least is sure to strike, And yield—what you’ll not pluck indeed, Not love, but, may be, like! You’ll look at least on love’s remains, A grave’s one violet: Your look?—that pays a thousand pains. What’s death?—you’ll love me yet! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet , by sun and candle-light 愛你,就象男子們?yōu)檎x而斗爭; I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, -- I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, and all my life -- and, if God choose; I shall but love thee better after death.
Thou hast they calling to some palace-floor
Most gracious singer of the high poems! where
The dancers will break footing, from the care
Of watching up thy pregnant lips for more
And dost thou lift this house’s latch to poor
For hand of thine? And canst thou think and bear
To let thy music drop here unaware
In folds of golden fullness at my door?
Look up and see the casement broken in
The bats and owlets builders in the roof!
My cricket chirps against thy mandolin
Hush; call no echo up in further proof
Of desolation! There’s voice within
That weeps
As thou must sing…..alone, aloof
?。?)Unlike are we, unlike, O princely Heart!
Unlike our uses and our destinies.
Our ministering two angels look surprise
On one another, as they strike athwart
Their wings in passing. Thou, bethink thee, art
A guest for queens to social pageantries,
With gages from a hundred brighter eyes
Than tears even can make mine, to play thy part
Of chief musician. What hast _thou_ to do
With looking from the lattice-lights at me,
A poor, tired, wandering singer, ... singing through
The dark, and leaning up a cypress tree?
The chrism is on thine head, -- on mine, the dew, --
And Death must dig the level where these agree
But only three in God’s universe
Have heard this world that has said, himself, besides
The speaking, and me listening, and replied
One of us….that was God…..and laid the curse
So darkly on my eyelids, as to amerce
My sight from seeing three –that if I had died
The death-weights, placed there, would have signified
Less absolute exclusion, Nay is worse
From God than from others, o’ my friend
Men could not part us with they wordy jars
Nor the seas changes us, nor the tempests bends
Our hands would touch for all the mountain bars
And, heaven being rolled between us at the end
We should but vow the faster the stars
I thought once how theocritus hand sung
Of sweet years, the dear and wished-for years
who each one in a gracious hand appears
To bear a gift for motal, old or young
And, as I mused in his antique tongue
I saw, in gradual vision through my tears
The sweet, sad years, the melancholy years
Those of my own life, who by turns has flung,
A shadow across me, straightway I was ware
So weeping, how a mystic shape did move
Behind me, and draw me backward by the hair
And a voice in mastery, while I strove
Gusee now who holds thee?
"Death?" I said, But, there
The silver answer rang, Not death, but love
I thought once how Theocritus had sung
Of the sweet years, the dear and wished-for years,
Who each one in a gracious hand appears
To bear a gift for mortals, old or young:
And, as I mused it in his antique tongue,
I saw, in gradual vision through my tears,
The sweet, sad years, the melancholy years,
Those of my own life, who by turns had flung
A shadow across me. Straightway I was 'ware,
So weeping, how a mystic Shape did move
Behind me, and drew me backward by the hair;
And a voice said in mastery, while I strove, --
`Guess now who holds thee?' -- `Death.' I said. But, there
The silver answer rang, -- `Not Death, but love.'
A poor, tired, wandering singer, ... singing through And Death must dig the level where these agree
