作者簡介
愛倫·坡(Edgar Allan Poe,1809~1949),美國文藝復興時期著名作家、詩人和批評家。愛倫·坡出生于波士頓,父母都是江湖藝人,在其幼年時代先后去世,他由養(yǎng)父母帶至英國受教育。后參軍,被選送西點軍校,因故被校方開除,以撰稿謀生,終其一生在貧困和酗酒中艱難度日。愛倫·坡是多才多藝的文壇怪杰,在創(chuàng)作和理論上追求“純藝術”,無論是小說,還是詩歌,愛倫·坡均長于營造某種“預定的氛圍”,以此來為讀者提供“美的享受”,對后世影響甚巨。

The sailor drew a long breath, with the air of a manrelieved of some intolerable burden, and then replied, in anassured tone: "I have no way of telling-but he can't be more than fouror five years old. "I don't mean that you should be at all this trouble fornothing, sir," said the man. "Couldn't expect it. Am verywilling to pay a reward for the finding of the animal-that isto say, any thing in reason." "Well," replied my friend, "that is all very fair, to be sure.Let me think!-What should I have? Oh!
