司徒雷登自幼生長(zhǎng)在中國(guó)杭州下城區(qū)的耶穌堂弄間,操一口純正的杭州話,
“是一個(gè)中國(guó)人更多于是一個(gè)美國(guó)人”。自1919年司徒雷登被任命為燕京大學(xué)校長(zhǎng),司徒雷登便為這座學(xué)校奔走馳驅(qū),建造起美輪美奐的燕園,以重金延請(qǐng)鄧之誠(chéng)、郭紹虞、容庚、錢穆、吳文藻等一批大學(xué)者來(lái)校任教。1927年,司徒雷登更一手促成燕大與哈佛合作,組成了著名的哈佛燕京學(xué)社。抗日期間,司徒雷登被關(guān)押在日本人的監(jiān)牢內(nèi),戰(zhàn)后又出任駐華大使,可以說(shuō),他的一生有大半時(shí)問(wèn)與中國(guó)的教育、時(shí)政難解難分。
歷史學(xué)家林孟熹曾評(píng)價(jià)說(shuō):
“整個(gè)20世紀(jì)大概沒(méi)有一個(gè)美國(guó)人像司徒雷登博士那樣,曾長(zhǎng)期而全面地卷入到中國(guó)的政治、文化、教育各個(gè)領(lǐng)域,并且產(chǎn)生過(guò)難以估量的影響?!甭勔欢嘣凇蹲詈笠淮窝葜v》中也說(shuō)“司徒雷登是中國(guó)人民的朋友?!奔?xì)細(xì)尋繹司徒雷登的這部沉埋已久的回憶錄,往昔如煙歲月便又重新歷歷在目了。

作者簡(jiǎn)介

作者:(美國(guó))司徒雷登(John Leighton Stuart)  司徒雷登(John Leighton Stuart,1876 -962),wasthe first President of Yenching University and later United States ambassador to China.Born in Hangzhou, he started missionary workin China in 1905 and in 1909 president of Yenching University, which was established bythe United States in Beijing. 1946, he wasappointed U.S. ambassador to China. On August 2nd 1949, Leighton Stuart had to leave Chinaquietly. 46 years after his death, Mr. Stuart'sashes were laid to rest at a cemetery near theeastern city of Hangzhou.

Acceptance for baptismwas chiefly a matter of doctrinal beliefs in simplified form, attendanceon Sunday services and the rigid keeping of that day, more thanin the moral and social implications of the Gospel. Repudiation of ancestor-worship seemed to be a needlessly harsh aggravation of thedifficulties for the Chinese convert. Worship was chiefly preaching, withno sensuous appeal through the pageantry of ritual, artistic adornmentand such, all of which are instinctive among Chinese. In general thetendency was toward a somewhat severe, repressive, formalizedconception of religion, which was a natural fruition of accepted standardsin the parent Church. In other missions, and latterly in most of them,there have been notable changes in all these matters. A far more serious problem, then at its worst, was the abuse of thesecular power represented by the governments supposedly behind themissionaries. Roman Catholics, through the Concordat with the FrenchGovernment claimed official status for their hierarchy and protectedtheir members in lawsuits and other political issues. To join a Churchmeant political and economic security. This statement is made withoutimpugning the motives of the Catholic priests. Still less is there criticismof their piety and devotion for which I have the greatest admiration. But itled to false reasons for joining the Church and to constant legalinjusticesdue to the fear Chinese officials had of complications with the Great Powers which were too often made the pretext for additi.onal territorialor commercial concessions. Chinese workers in Protestant missions were appealed to to help relatives or neighbors in difficulties and alsohad the temptation to supplement their meager salaries by assisting insuch negotiations.

  •   司徒雷登這位美國(guó)老爺子因?yàn)橐黄飨镍櫸摹秳e了,司徒雷登》而在中國(guó)家喻戶曉,其在中國(guó)的知名度絕對(duì)高過(guò)過(guò)半的美國(guó)總統(tǒng)和五星上將。在那篇犀利、幽默而又氣勢(shì)磅礴的檄文里,司徒雷登代表的也絕不僅僅是一位在中國(guó)生活了50年的前大學(xué)教授和駐華大使,而是代表了一個(gè)以霸權(quán)始,以失敗終的,反動(dòng)的、妄圖奴役中國(guó)人民的帝國(guó)。正是因?yàn)槊飨纳罟P,使得60年來(lái)在中國(guó)人的心目中,司徒雷登始終是一個(gè)咎由自取的失敗者的形象。正如一提到章士釗,人們首先想到的是魯迅先生筆下的“落水狗”,而不是一個(gè)真正的接觸的學(xué)者。然而正是這部《在華五十年》,為我們還原了半個(gè)多世紀(jì)前一位活躍于中國(guó)政壇的學(xué)者型外交家的形象。盡管自傳往往有自捧之嫌,但作為一位深受中國(guó)傳統(tǒng)文化熏陶的謙謙學(xué)者,司徒雷登對(duì)自己的描述相當(dāng)客觀、公正,很多內(nèi)容可作為信史來(lái)讀。對(duì)于喜歡中國(guó)近現(xiàn)代歷史的讀者,此書絕對(duì)有著很高的參考價(jià)值。

  •   書的設(shè)計(jì)有點(diǎn)特色。外面有塑料外殼保護(hù),塑料殼上有司徒雷登的照片,只是發(fā)來(lái)的時(shí)候有點(diǎn)臟。有兩張很漂亮的插頁(yè),可見(jiàn)是費(fèi)了點(diǎn)腦筋的。還有一張藏書票,看不出與本書內(nèi)容有何關(guān)系。英文版印得清晰,大方,文字也還淺顯易讀。
  •   司徒雷登的英文表達(dá)當(dāng)然值得一看,書中透露了司徒雷登本人對(duì)國(guó)共兩黨的看法,相當(dāng)直接,希望了解現(xiàn)代史的人們值得參考
  •   這個(gè)出版社的這一系列英文版本都特別好,有大幅大幅彩頁(yè),內(nèi)容的編排很在意細(xì)節(jié)之處,包裝也是獨(dú)樹(shù)一幟,除了大氣精美之外,外包有靈活摘下的塑料書衣,防水耐臟,真是細(xì)微之處顯功夫??!

    這個(gè)系列另外基本還有:達(dá)爾文的《物種起源》、弗洛伊德的《夢(mèng)的解析》、羅素的《中國(guó)問(wèn)題》等。

    值得推薦。
