《霧都孤兒》是作者的第一部社會小說，年輕的狄更斯以現(xiàn)實派畫家威廉-荷加斯為榜樣，抱著改造社會、抗議社會的抱負，描寫一個淪于底層的孤兒奧利弗的悲慘遭遇。奧利弗自幼遭到遺棄，在孤兒院長大，因不堪棺材店老板的欺壓，逃到倫敦，不幸落入狠毒的竊賊團伙首領費金之于，被訓練成扒手。一次上街行竊，因誤會而被警察抓獲，釋放后由好心的紳士布朗洛所收養(yǎng)。此后又再次落入賊手，在心地善良的女扒手南希的協(xié)助下終于逃出賊窩，碰巧遇到自己的姨媽羅斯小姐，并找回本應由他繼承的遺產(chǎn)。    小說以孤兒奧利弗為線索，廣泛地展示了社會底層人們的生活，以及廣大以奧利弗、南希、羅斯為代表的善良人們的美好品噴，他們雖生活不幸，但都保持著美好的天性，給那個苦難深重、黑暗重重的霧都倫敦增添了些許亮色，洋溢著深厚的人道主義光輝。
