IN THE YEAR 1878 1 took my degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of London, and proceeded to Netley to go through the course prescribed for surgeons in the Army. Having completed my studies there, I was duly attached the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers as assistant surgeon. The regiment was stationed in India at the time, and before I could join it, the second Afghan war had broken out. On landing at Bombay, I learn that my corps had advanced through the passes was already deep in the enemy's country. I folk however, with many other officers who were in the same situation as myself, and succeeded in reaching Candahar in safety, where I found my regiment, and at once entered upon my new duties. The campaign brought honours and promotion to many, but for me it had nothing but misfortune disaster. 1 was removed from my brigade and attached to the Berkshires, with whom the fatal battle of Maiwand.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (I859-I93O) was a Scottish author most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered a major: 'innovation in the field of crime fiction, and for the adventures of Professor Challenger. He was a prolific writer whose other works include science fiction stories, historical novels, plays and romances, poetry, and non-fiction. Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world.

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of British author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based" consulting detective", Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skillful use of astute observation , deductive reasoning and inference to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first two stories (short novels)appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in1890, respectively. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the be ginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891;further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1875up to I9O7, with a final case in 19I4.
