章節(jié)摘錄
版權(quán)頁: Questions 1 to 3 are based on the following conversation. W: You're an expert on urban problems, Mr. Cross(1)I wonder how you would describethe characteristics of these enormous cities which have sprung up in Asia and LatinAmerica? M: The first point to make is that they are different from large cities in Europe andAmerica. W. Surely all large cities are essentially similar. M. It's true that in all large cities there are the same problems of provision of housingand services, but the difference lies in the time factor. W. Surely some of the cities we are considering are just as old and, in some cases, much older, than cities in the United States, for instance. M: Very true, but the large cities of Europe and the United States grew relativelyslowly. (2)London had a population of more than a million at the beginning of thenineteenth century and this number grew for more than a hundred years until itreached its maximum of more than eight million. And this growth was parallel toindustrial growth throughout the country. The same is true of New York, for example. W: But this is not true of Mexico City or Buenos Aires? M. No, it is not. (3)Throughout Latin America and in parts of Asia, cities have grownmuch faster than industry, or agriculture for that matter. Some of these cities havequadrupled in size in less than two decades, while industrial growth over the sameperiod may only have reached thirty or forty percent. Questions 4 to 6 are based on the following conversation. M. Nice to see you again, Miss Ward. Did you have a good holiday? W. No, I certainly did not have a good holiday. M: Sorry to hear that. What was wrong? W. Well, when I arrived in Saint Cuthbert, I had to spend four hours at the airport... M: Oh, dear.., you had a very bad start. But the hotel was nice, wasn't it? W: No, it was not! You said itwas very modern. You were quite right. They hadn'tfinished building it! We couldn't sleep because the workmen were working allnight.., on our balcony! You said it had got a swimming pool. It had but it wasempty. (5)And the restaurant served fish every night. M: Oh, dear... W. You said the hotel was near the beach, and that we could walk to the sea in twominutes. M. Couldn't you? W. Well, we could.., but there was an oil refinery between the hotel and the beach, and it took half an hour to walk around it. M.. I'm terribly sorry. We really didn't know... (6)I'm afraid we're unable to give youa refund, but we can give you a ten percent discount on next year's holiday... W. Next year! Next year, I'm staying in England.
