　　Knowledge, as the author says, is a two-edgedweapon that can be used for good or evil. Hequotes the example of scince being used in twocompletely different ways——firstly to give a gunnerthe weapon with which to shoot someone and thento provide a surgeon with the necessary equip-ment, skills and medication to restore to health theperson that the gunner has shot. Politicians, reli-gious leaders and scientists, it seems, provide uswith good examples of what people can do withthe same information and the same knowledge.With the same facts,often twisted a certain way,one politician will try to persuade you that a newhighway past your village is a good thing, whileanother politician, his opponent, will use same in-formation or knowledge to persuade you that thehighway is a bad idea. Or imagine that an archaeol-ogist finds human footprint in a layer Of rock mil-lions of years old. What does he do with that infor-mation,that knowledge？ He will use it to supportan argument that man is millions of years olderthan we ever thought, while another archaelolgistwill either express serious doubt about the discov-ery,or will at least interpret the same knowledgeto support a different argument.
