《木偶奇遇記》是科洛迪的代表作，發(fā)表于1880年。它敘述老人澤皮德把一塊能哭會笑的木頭雕成木偶，并把取得生命的小木偶當成兒子。老人賣掉上衣，供兒子上學。可是小木偶一心貪玩，為了看戲不惜賣掉課本。在酒店獲得好心老板的五枚金幣，回家路上受狐貍和貓的欺騙，金幣被搶走：過后又遇上強盜，差點兒被他們吊死，幸虧巧遇仙女而得救。被狐貍和貓騙走金幣后去起訴，又被稀里糊涂的笨蛋法官投進監(jiān)獄；出獄后，又被捕獸器夾住，被迫當了看家狗。他后悔極了，心想：“如果我像其他好孩子一樣喜歡讀書、做工，現(xiàn)在我就會和爸爸呆在一起過著幸福的生活，就不會在這里給人家當他的看門狗了。”
　
夜里，他因幫助主人抓住黃鼠狼而重獲自由。他一心想成為一個用功讀書的好孩子，可是又經(jīng)不起誘惑。在壞同學的慫恿下又逃學到海邊看魚，后又被引誘到玩兒國，在瘋狂的玩了幾天之后，變成一頭蠢驢。后來還是仙女搭救了他。最后，他們父子在鯊魚腹中意外重逢，并設法逃了出來，在海邊住下。從此，小木偶每天去做工，有空還編籃子，晚上讀書、寫字，后來得知仙女病了，便把自己所有的錢給了她。仙女很感激，于是皮諾曹終于成為一個誠實、聽話、又愛學習，還能幫助父母的好孩子。
　
《木偶奇遇記》描述了木偶皮諾喬從一個任性、淘氣、懶惰、愛說謊、不關心他人、不愛學習、整天只想著玩的木偶，變成一個懂禮貌、愛學習、勤奮工作、孝敬長輩、關愛他人的好孩子的過程，以及他所經(jīng)歷的一連串的奇遇，充滿了童趣與想像。發(fā)生于皮諾曹身上的故事告訴我們，一個孩子的自然天性在許多方面都是需要修正的。也就是說，在自然天性里往往會有不少不夠盡善盡美的表現(xiàn)，等待著我們的逐步克服。
