理查德·謝弗,美國(guó)芝加哥大學(xué)社會(huì)學(xué)系碩士、博士,德保羅大學(xué)社會(huì)學(xué)教授;著有《社會(huì)學(xué)精要》、《種族與族群》和《美國(guó)的種族與族群性》等,文章常見(jiàn)諸《美國(guó)社會(huì)學(xué)期刊》、《當(dāng)代社會(huì)學(xué)》、《社會(huì)學(xué)和社會(huì)研究》、《社會(huì)學(xué)教學(xué)》等著名學(xué)術(shù)期刊。謝弗教授擁有35年豐富的教學(xué)經(jīng)驗(yàn),他曾任教于大學(xué)、成人教育計(jì)劃、護(hù)士學(xué)校,甚至在全美最高戒備的監(jiān)獄里開(kāi)設(shè)過(guò)社會(huì)學(xué)講座。

Sociologists can learn a great deal usingavailable information. For example, everyyear the Social Security Administration receives thousands ofregistrations for newborn babies. Usingthese data, we can identify some culturaltrends in the popularity of childrensnames.As the accompanying figure shows,for example, John has been an extremelypopular boys name for over a century. In2004, over 5,000 babies were namedJohn, making the moniker the 18thmost popular name that year. Though on-ly about half as many babies were namedJuan in 2004, that name has been gainingin popularity in recent generations, reflect-ing the growing impact of the Latino popu-lation in the United States.We can see some other patterns inthe annual data on name giving. In manyethnic and racial groups, parents choosenames that display pride in their identity orthe uniqueness they see in their children.Among African Americans, for example,names such as Ebony and Imani are themost popular ones for girls.……
