One day,Chang Tsu and Chieh Ni wereat work in the field together,when Confuciuspassed by.He sent Tsze Lu to inquire about aford.Chang Tsu said,"Who is he that holdsthe reins in the carriage there?" Tsze Lu toldhim,"It is Kung Chiu." "Really? It is Kung Chiu of Lu?" heasked incredulous."Yes," was the reply,towhich the other rejoined,"He well knows theford." Chich Ni said,"Are you not the discipleof Kung Chiu of Lu?" "I am," he replied. Then Chich Ni said to him,"Disorder,like a swelling flood,spreads over the wholeempire,and who will change this state ofaffairs? It is better to follow those who havewithdrawn from the world altogether?" Withthis he fell back to his work. Tsze Lu,who had fallen behind hismaster,met an old man,carrying across hisshoulder a basket for weeds.Tsze Lu said tohim,"Have you seen my master,sir?" The old man replied,"Your limbs areunaccustomed to toil;you cannot distinguishthe five kinds of grain;who is your master?"With this,he planted his staff in the ground,and proceeded to weed. When Confucius and his disciples cameto the State of Song,senior officials thereplotted to persecute him because they werejealous of his talent.Confucius fled to theplace between the Chen and Cai states andlived by eating edible wild herbs.At that timemany people did not understand Confuciantheory and his way of spreading the theory.
