秘密花園

前言

弗朗西斯·伯內特（1849～1 924）生于英國曼城，是著名的英裔美國小說家、劇作家、兒童文學家。幼年生活在曼城的貧民窟里，家境貧寒凄慘。1854年父親去世，是年她只有5歲。1865年舉家遷往美國田納西州的諾克斯維爾市。這次搬遷對其家境并沒有多大的改善，1867年母親去世，18歲的弗朗西斯擔負起了撫養(yǎng)4個弟妹的重任。她開始以寫作來艱難地維持著全家的生計。1877年她發(fā)表了成名作《勞瑞家的女兒》  （The Lassof LONrl e，s）．該故事取材于幼年時代在英國蘭開夏的生活經歷。1886年發(fā)表的兒童

內容概要

《秘密花園》是美國著名兒童文學作家伯內特夫人最負盛名的作品，也是一百年來暢銷不衰的經典兒童小說。它曾經先后十幾次被改編成電影，電視，卡通片，話劇，舞臺劇等，受到全世界大人和孩子的追捧與熱愛。在英語兒章文學里，《秘密花園》是公認的無年齡界限的精品，也是一部打通雅俗界限的文學作品，被收入《牛津世界經典叢書》。

作者簡介

弗朗西絲·伯內特(1849-1924)：英語世界家喻戶曉的兒童文學作家，18歲開始發(fā)表作品，1877年發(fā)表成名作《勞瑞家的女兒》，1909年發(fā)表了她最為著名的作品《秘密花園》，由此奠定了她在英國文學史上舉足輕重的地位。此外，還有代表作品《小少爺方特羅伊》、《小公主》等。也廣受世界各國青少年的喜愛。

When Mary Lennox was sent to Misselth waite Manor to live with heruncle，everybody said she was the most disagreeable-looking child everseen．It was true,too．She had a little thin face and a little thin body，thinlight hair and a sour expression．Her hair was yellow，and her face wasyellow because she had been born in lndia and had always been ill in one way or another．Her father had held a position under the English Government and had always been busy and ill himself．and her motherhad been a great beauty who cared only to go to parties and amuseherself with gay people．She had not wanted a little girl at all，and whenMary was born she handed her over to the care 0f an Ayah．who wasmade to understand that if she wished to please the Mem Sahib she must keep the child out of sight as much as possible．So when she was asickly，fretful，ugly little baby she was kept out of the way，and when shebecame a sickly，fretful，toddling thing she was kept out of the way also．She never remembered seeing familiarly anything but the dark faces of her Ayah and the other native servants，and as they always obeyed herand gave her her own way in everything，because the Mem Sahib wouldbe angry if she was disturbed by her crying，by the time she was Six years old she was as tyrannical and selfish a little pig as ever lived．The young English governess who came to teach her to read and writedisliked her So much that she gave up her place in three months，and when other governesses came to try to fill it they always went away in ashor ter time than the first one．So if Mary had not chosen to really want to know how to read books she would never have Iearned her letters at all．    One frightfully hot morning，when she was about nine years old，sheawakened feeling very cross．and she became crosser still when she sa wthat the servant who stood by her bedside was not her Ayah．    "Why did you come？"she said to the strange woman．"I will not Ietyou stay．Send my Ayah to me．"
