Though its specification was published in 1989, IP multicasting, has seen somewhat limited use. A few routers that support multicasting have been available on the Internet, though this is slowly changing. Routers in the Internet tend to be replaced by multicast-capable ones only when a new routcr is required to replace an old one. In the meantime, researchers wanted a resource and testbed for testing multicastintng protocols and applications. They also wanted a way to enable thedeployment of multicast applications without having to wait for multicast-enabled devices to be installed through the Inrernet. This led to the develop-ment ofMbone, which supports routing multicast packets without disturbing or altering other Internet Traffic and has been in existence since 1992. ……
