章節(jié)摘錄
In America, researcher James Gauderman and his colleagues followed 1,759 children aged 10to 18 in a dozen of South.ern California communities. In the first long-term study of the effect of airpollution on children, they reported that children in the communities with higher levels of air pollu-tion were more likely to have a lung disease. The pollution came mainly from car exhaust, they said. The researchers found that 7.9 percent of the 18-year-olds in the highest pollution areas hadlung problems. Among those in the least-polluted areas, 1.6 percent had lung problems. It comes not simply but in pairs. In Mexico City, scientists found air pollution prevented younglungs from growing and working properly, after they studied 3,170 eight-year-old children at schoolsin the city. Air pollution in the Mexico City is more harmful to children than cigarette smoking andmay cause lung diseases in later life, Reuters reported. Scientists in both Mexico and America gave people almost the same suggestion——to contribute tocleaner air. For instance, carpooling, taking public transportation, walking or biking to work orschool can make a difference.
