章節(jié)摘錄
Our children are being beaten up by a crazy spelling system that appears to beloved by millions. They are being beaten up because they are constantlybombarded by unpredictable silent letters, double consonants that defyexplanation, endless varieties of vowel combinations, and rules that arenotoriously unreliable, They are forced to attempt to learn a system that isillogical, inconsistent, and——worst of all——needlesly complicated. Not only are theyphysically beaten up. but many of them do end up wlth well-concealed scars ontheir psyches. At least one study has shown that using a system as irrational asours may arrest the development of logical thinking. Thats not Just being beatingup; its child abuse exactly,Theres a social stigma attached to being a poor speller, although the only thingbeing a good speller makes one better at is spelling. It doesnt make one a betterwriter, a better poet, a more creative person with words. It doesnt make himunderstand the essence of the language better. Shakespeare would have beenthe exact same creative genius he was whether he was a good or bad speller. Hewas just lucky enough to have lived tn a day when he was Judged by themeaning of his words, rather than the placement of the leL-b~~rs within thosewords. In Shakespeares day, most peoples spelling was erratic; therefore, whenhe spelled words many different ways no one even noticed.During the last 30 years or so, literacy In the F_nglish-speaking world has beendeclining at an alarming rate. Its not hard to guess why. During the rapiddevelopment of electronics In the past 40 years, speech, for the flrst time In theentire course of history, has become a mass medlum. The people, havingdiscovered those electronic channels through which they can receive InformationIn their own language, are now circumventing the outdated writing system whichhas been the bottleneck In mass communication. And having alienated themselve~~from it. they have become less able and less willing to cope wtth its irrationalcomplexities. In an attempt to correct this situation, the Federal Government ofthe United States Initiated its "Decade of the 70s" program. During that ten-year period, both State and Federal governments have poured massive sums Intoprograms designed to eradicate Illiteracy, not by re-designing the outdatedwriting system, but by attempting to shape the minds of human beings intoconformity with the system, This extravagant program achieved nothing. ThedilrC to Illiteracy continues as before, except that it now has reached theproportions of a crisis, For example, the United States Navy now complains thatfrom 40% to 50% of todays recruits cant read the instruction manuals, TheNavy is plainly worried about the future.……
